📜Origins and Trivia

🔤
Name origin: Lugia is said to come from the Greek arguros, “silver”: in Japanese, the first syllables of Arugirosu, rearranged, give Rugia. A nod to Pokémon Silver, whose cover it graces.
🎨
Inspiration: Half bird, half sea reptile, it recalls a plesiosaur, and perhaps Ryūjin, the dragon of the deep in Japanese mythology. Its “wings” look more like arms.
🎬
At the movies: It has the lead role in the second film, Pokémon: The Movie 2000 (1999), as the guardian of the threatened balance between Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres.
💡
Did you know?: In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, on GameCube, a dark-feathered Shadow Lugia is at the heart of the story.
