Origins and Trivia
Name origin: Mew takes the first syllable of the Japanese myūtanto, “mutant”. Its clone, Mewtwo, takes its name from it.
Design: Its designer, Shigeki Morimoto, drew it after Mewtwo, but simpler, so it would take little space on the cartridge. It looks like a kitten, a jerboa and an embryo all at once.
A development secret: Mew was added at the very end of the development of Pokémon Red and Green, without being meant to be obtained in normal play. It had to be received at events, which fueled its legend and many rumors, like the truck near the S.S. Anne.
Mythical: Mew is the first Mythical Pokémon of the series. It can learn every TM in its game, illustrating the idea that its DNA contains that of every Pokémon.
