Pokémon Puzzle Challenge offers plenty of modes for a single Game Boy Color cartridge. Here is each one, from Challenge mode against the Johto Gym Leaders to Clear mode.
Challenge Mode
The main mode: take on the eight Johto Gym Leaders, from Falkner to Clair, then the Elite Four. Victories unlock new playable Pokémon.
The Other Modes

| Marathon | The stack rises faster and faster; survive as long as possible. |
| Time Trial | Like Marathon, but against the clock: score as many points as possible. |
| Line | Clear blocks fast enough to bring the stack below a line. |
| Puzzle | Increasingly difficult puzzles with a limited number of moves. |
| Clear | Empty the screen of blocks that keep falling from the top. |
| Two Players | A duel using the Game Link Cable. |
| Tutorial | Learn the rules and techniques. |
The Rules
You swap two horizontally adjacent blocks to line up at least three blocks of the same color. Combos, which clear more than three blocks at once, and chains, which are cascading clears, send garbage blocks to your opponent.
