An adaptation of Panel de Pon
Pokémon Puzzle League belongs to the Panel de Pon series, known in the West as Tetris Attack when it came out on the Super Nintendo. Just as Tetris Attack had replaced the fairies of Panel de Pon with the world of Yoshi’s Island, Pokémon Puzzle League replaces them with the world of Pokémon. This is the game that gave the series its official Western name: Puzzle League.
The Nintendo 64 version of Panel de Pon, on which the game was based, was cancelled in Japan and later ported to GameCube. A prototype of it was discovered in July 2020.
The sequel
A Game Boy Color version, Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, came out in Europe in June 2001, with the world of Gold and Silver.
