The Tunnel is the game’s second course. It burrows into the rock at the foot of an active volcano and houses an old power plant, now disused. A little auxiliary energy remains, just enough to run the automatic armored doors. Unsurprisingly, the place attracts Electric-type Pokémon. Twelve species can be photographed here, and much of the fun comes from a staged event: a giant egg that you hatch to switch the plant back on.
Access and unlocking
The Tunnel opens once you have photographed six different species on the Beach and presented the shots to Professor Oak. In turn, the Tunnel leads to the Volcano through a secret exit: near the end, a passage is blocked by rubble, and an Electrode stands in front of it. You must hit it with an item (a Fluffruit will do) so that it explodes and clears the way. You therefore cannot open this exit on your very first visit, since the Fluffruit only arrives later, with your Report score.
The twelve species
| Pokémon | Where and how | Useful item |
|---|---|---|
| Electrode | Present outside and inside. It doesn’t react while it’s rolling; when stationary and hit, it explodes. | Fluffruit or Pester Ball |
| Electabuzz | Chases Electrode before the entrance, then reappears inside. A Pester Ball knocks it down, which briefly blocks the ZERO-ONE’s path. Once the plant is restarted, two Electabuzz stand near the control screens toward the end. | Fluffruit, Pester Ball, Dash Engine (to get ahead and shoot it from the front) |
| Pikachu | Three appearances: one Pikachu before the entrance, which ends up climbing onto a rolling Electrode; another near the giant egg; a third playing with a Diglett. | Fluffruit and Poké Flute for the egg |
| Kakuna | A group hangs from the ceiling at the entrance. They fall when an Electrode explodes. | Dash Engine (to get close to one of them) |
| Zapdos | It is born from the giant egg, hatched by Pikachu’s electricity, then flies to the generator to restart it. | Fluffruit and Poké Flute |
| Magikarp | After the egg, a small pool holds one. An item thrown into the deep water makes it jump. | Fluffruit or Pester Ball |
| Zubat | Two metal doors split the tunnel in three. Each time one opens, a Zubat shoots past: the shot is quick. | None |
| Haunter | A purple sphere floats just after Zapdos hatches, and a second one near Pikachu and Diglett. When photographed, they turn out to be Haunter in the developed shots. | None |
| Diglett | Toward the end, plays with a Pikachu. | None |
| Dugtrio | Photograph each Diglett: Pikachu goes to play with the next one, until it comes across a Dugtrio. One more shot brings out a second, then a third. | None |
| Magnemite | Three Magnemite at the end of the Tunnel emit Supersonic that blurs the photo. Distracting them with Fluffruit calms them. | Fluffruit |
| Magneton | Lure the three Magnemite toward each other with the food: they fuse. Magneton no longer uses Supersonic. | Fluffruit |
Waking the plant: Zapdos’s egg
This is the big moment of the course. Near the giant egg, a Pikachu prowls. With the Fluffruit, lure it right up to the egg, then play the Poké Flute: the melody prompts it to fire its electric attack at the shell. The egg hatches and releases Zapdos, which flies to the generator and strikes it with lightning. The plant then comes back to life. The light returns in the last room, where the course’s Pokémon Sign is hidden, and the Electabuzz show up near the control screens toward the end.
For the Zapdos shot, look for an image where the bird fills a large part of the frame and the lightning around it is visible: size and pose count for more than the background. A shot taken while it attacks the generator is the most telling.
The Diglett, Dugtrio and Pikachu chain
Toward the end of the course, a Pikachu plays with a Diglett. Each shot taken of a Diglett sends it off to a new companion; the game thus chains the encounters until a Dugtrio appears, then three. To see all three pop out of the ground, take a photo at each stage.
The Pokémon Sign: Pinsir Shadow
In the Tunnel’s last room, a spotlight is aimed at rocks and debris. When Zapdos has switched the plant back on, the light passes through this debris and casts the silhouette of a Pinsir on the back wall. Professor Oak will name it the Pinsir Shadow. To see it, you must therefore have the Fluffruit and the Poké Flute, and have hatched the egg. Careful: the shadow only stays visible for a while; past a certain point in the course, the spotlight flickers and goes out. Take the photo as soon as you enter the room.
Special pose: Pikachu on an Electrode
Before entering the plant, photograph the Pikachu standing at the edge of the track. It scampers off. Photograph it once or twice more: it ends up jumping onto a rolling Electrode and staying balanced on it until the Electrode hits a wall and explodes. The photo is worth 600 bonus points according to Bulbapedia, and it works on your very first visit, without any item.
Opening the way to the Volcano
Very near the end, close to the Magnemite, an Electrode sits in front of a passage blocked by rubble. Throw a Fluffruit at it: it explodes, the rocks collapse and a new exit opens toward the Volcano. This secret exit replaces the course’s usual exit: so take your last shots of Magneton and Magnemite before blowing up the Electrode.
Continuing the guide
The next course is the Volcano. For all the details on the items used here, see the page on Professor Oak’s items.
