📜Origins and Trivia

🔤
Name origin: Bulbasaur blends “bulb” and “dinosaur”. In Japanese, Fushigidane is a pun: it means both “strange” (“isn’t that odd?”) and “mysterious seed”. In French, it is called Bulbizarre, from “bulbe” (bulb) and “bizarre”.
🎨
Design: Drawn by Atsuko Nishida, it is inspired by a frog, with its short legs and stocky build. The bulb on its back recalls an onion or a lily, and it grows by soaking up sunlight.
💡
Did you know?: No. 001 in the National Pokédex, it is one of only two starters with two types from its first stage (Grass and Poison), along with Rowlet. Its name also inspired Bulbapedia, the big English-language Pokémon encyclopedia.
