📜Origins and Trivia

🔤
Name origin: Charizard blends “char” and “lizard”. In French, it is called Dracaufeu, from the Latin draco, “dragon”, and the cry “au feu !” (“fire!”).
🎨
Inspiration: Drawn by Atsuko Nishida, like Charmander and Charmeleon, it looks like a European dragon with traits of a lizard and a dinosaur. Yet it is not a Dragon type: it took Mega Charizard X, a Fire and Dragon type, for its types to match its looks.
📺
In the anime: Ash’s Charizard is one of the most famous in the anime: his Charmeleon evolves in episode 46 to face an Aerodactyl, then refuses to obey its Trainer for a long time.
🃏
TCG star: Its holographic card no. 4/102 from the Base Set became one of the most sought-after cards among collectors. It was reprinted in 2026 in the 30th Anniversary Classic Collection.
