📜Origins and Trivia

🔤
Name origin: Charmander combines “char” and “salamander”. In Japanese, Hitokage means “salamander” and hides a double pun: “fire” and “lizard”, but also “human shape”. In French, it is called Salamèche, from “salamandre” and “mèche” (wick), the one burning at the tip of its tail.
🔥
Its flame: The flame on its tail has burned since birth and reflects its health and mood: lively when it is well, weak when it is tired, blazing when it is angry. According to the Pokédex, it would not survive if the flame went out.
🎨
Design: Atsuko Nishida drew its whole line, from Charmander to Charizard, as well as Mega Charizard X. The little lizard recalls the salamanders of legend, said to live in fire.
📺
In the anime: Ash takes in his Charmander in episode 11, after its Trainer abandoned it in the rain. It will become the most famous Charizard of the anime.
