The Tournament mode of the first Pokémon Stadium follows the rules of the official Japanese tournaments of 1997 and 1998. You have to beat eight Trainers in a row; each win earns a badge, shown on the player’s cap. Here are the rules and the teams of the L50-55 division, inspired by real participants in the 1997 tournament.

Tournament Rules Divisions
L1-30 Inspired by the Nintendo Cup 98. Pokémon from Lv. 1 to 30, which can normally be obtained at that level. Poké Ball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, Master Ball: same Trainers, different levels and moves. L50-55 Inspired by the Nintendo Cup 97. Pokémon from Lv. 50 to 55; the sum of the levels of the three Pokémon must not exceed 155. One division only.
Pikachu. Free Battle also offers three rule sets: L1-30, L50-55, or open with six Pokémon of any level. Eight preset Trainers, with Pokémon from Lv. 20 to Lv. 100, can be used.

Win the Master Ball division of the L1-30 tournament with a Pikachu on your team and it will be able to learn Surf.
