📜Origins and Trivia

🔤
Name origin: Pikachu combines two Japanese sound words: “pika pika”, the crackle of electricity, and “chū”, which adds a cute touch. Its name was not adapted in any language. For the French version of Red and Blue, the translator had first suggested “Ronge-Hertz”.
🎨
Design: Atsuko Nishida drew it as a small round creature, without first thinking of a mouse. Its cheeks that store electricity are inspired by a squirrel’s cheek pouches, and its lightning-shaped tail makes its type readable at a glance. Ken Sugimori set its colors.
📺
Mascot of the series: Ash’s companion since the very first episode of the anime, it became the face of the entire franchise. Clefairy had first been considered as the mascot, but Pikachu’s success on TV changed that.
💡
Did you know?: The Unova regional Pokédex (Black and White) is the only one in the series without Pikachu. In Pokémon Yellow, it has a unique cry, and from X and Y to Sword and Shield, it uses the anime’s cry.
