Announcement and release
The two games were announced on 6 June 2017 in a Pokémon Direct, alongside Pokkén Tournament DX. The first visual shows two creatures halfway between Necrozma and the legendary Pokémon of Sun and Moon: these are the Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings forms, revealed later. A trailer from 18 August 2017 unveiled the heroes’ new outfits, Elio and Selene, and the Dusk Form of Lycanroc. The games were released simultaneously worldwide on 17 November 2017, one year after Sun and Moon.
From autumn 2017, The Pokémon Company presented these versions as the last main-series games on 3DS, ahead of the move to the Nintendo Switch with Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! the following year. Pokémon France followed every announcement: our news coverage from the time is gathered on the page Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon on Pokémon France.
The editions
In addition to the standard boxes of each version, Nintendo Europe sold three limited editions, announced on 12 July 2017:
| Edition | Contents |
|---|---|
| Ultra Dual Edition | Both games in physical form, a steelbook case and two download codes each giving 50 Potions |
| Ultra Sun Collector’s Edition | The Ultra Sun game and a matching steelbook case |
| Ultra Moon Collector’s Edition | The Ultra Moon game and a matching steelbook case |
Placed side by side, the two standard covers reveal the silhouette of Ultra Necrozma.
Updates
| Version | Date | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| 1.1 | 13 December 2017 | Fixes a possible freeze during a prologue cutscene after choosing Litten, how Wide Guard and Ion Deluge work, and the loss of a move learned with BP at Mantine Surf or the Battle Tree. |
| 1.2 | 6 February 2018 | Various fixes. |
Compatibility
- Sun and Moon: trades and battles are possible between the four Alola versions. Our article Compatibility with Sun and Moon details the limits.
- Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter: Pokémon from 3DS games, and those from Game Boy games via Virtual Console, can be deposited in the Alola games. The Bank also serves as a gateway to Pokémon HOME.
- Pokémon HOME: Pokémon from Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon arrive there via Pokémon Bank, one way only.
Sales
In Japan, the two versions passed 1.2 million copies in three days. As of 31 December 2017, Nintendo reported 7.17 million worldwide, then 7.51 million at the end of its fiscal year, on 31 March 2018. That is markedly fewer than Sun and Moon, already beyond 16 million at the same point: the public had partly skipped these alternate versions released a year after the originals.
