Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon hold a special place in the series: between them, these versions give access to every Legendary Pokémon released up to 2017, Mythical Pokémon aside. Those of Alola are met during and after the adventure; those of other regions wait at the end of the Ultra Wormhole. This page sums up where and how to get each one, with version exclusives and special requirements.

The Ultra Burst: Necrozma reveals its ultimate form to the hero.

Solgaleo and Lunala

Lillie’s Cosmog, nicknamed Nebby, evolves during the story into Solgaleo in Ultra Sun or Lunala in Ultra Moon. It is then absorbed by Necrozma, then freed. After you win the League, Lillie is waiting for you with it on the Mahalo Trail: since she isn’t a Trainer, she offers to let you take it. You catch it after a battle, at level 60. Our article Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo and Lunala details their moves.

Necrozma and its forms

Necrozma is the true protagonist of these versions. You face it for the first time at the altar, fused with Solgaleo or Lunala, then in its ultimate form, Ultra Necrozma, at the top of Megalo Tower. You can’t catch it in either of these two battles. It comes back later: on the road to the League, at Mount Lanakila, you find it weakened in a crater. Agree to pass on a little light from your Z-Power Ring and it regains enough strength to battle. It can then be caught, at level 65, and it holds the Ultranecrozium Z.

  • Dusk Mane: fusion with Solgaleo using the N-Solarizer. Psychic/Steel type.
  • Dawn Wings: fusion with Lunala using the N-Lunarizer. Psychic/Ghost type.
  • Ultra Necrozma: in battle, a fused form holding the Ultranecrozium Z can trigger the Ultra Burst. Psychic/Dragon type, Neuroforce Ability.

The Necrozma page in our section explains fusion and the Ultra Burst step by step.

The astral trio and Necrozma

The island guardians

Once you are Champion, you can challenge the four guardian Pokémon in their ruins. Each one waits for you at level 60 in front of its altar. A cutscene first invites you to the Ruins of Conflict; each battle is triggered by interacting with the altar’s statue. Our article Island Guardians presents their stats.

The four Tapus

Zygarde and Type: Null

After the League, a cutscene shows Zygarde in a cave: it waits for you in Resolution Cave, on Poni Island, at level 60. The Cells and Cores scattered across Alola then let you assemble its other forms. Type: Null, the chimera created by the Aether Foundation, is given to you after the League; it evolves into Silvally with high friendship.

The Ultra Beasts

Technically distinct from Legendary Pokémon, Ultra Beasts share their rarity. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add four:

  • Poipole: given by the Ultra Recon Squad in Ultra Megalopolis after you defeat Ultra Necrozma, at level 40. It evolves into Naganadel when it levels up while knowing Dragon Pulse.
  • Blacephalon (Ultra Sun) and Stakataka (Ultra Moon): after the League, the Ultra Recon Squad calls you to Poni Grove, where several specimens are causing trouble. Hau catches one; you can catch the other two, at level 60.

The seven Ultra Beasts of Sun and Moon can be caught without limit behind the white wormholes: see our Ultra Wormhole page.

The Legendary Pokémon of other regions

All the other Legendary Pokémon are found in the Ultra Space Wilds, behind the colored wormholes of the Ultra Warp Ride. They are all level 60 and can only be caught once. The farther you go into the tunnel, the more frequent the ring portals that hold them become.

Mythical Pokémon

Mythical Pokémon can’t be encountered in the game. Zeraora, the new Mythical Pokémon introduced by Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and its elders such as Magearna or Marshadow, were only obtainable through official distributions, which have now ended. Our article Pokémon and Item Distributions keeps a record of them.

Catching tips

  • Save before every Legendary Pokémon: if one is accidentally knocked out, you just reload your game.
  • Bring a Pokémon that knows False Swipe and a move that puts to sleep or paralyzes: level 60 Legendary Pokémon have a low catch rate.
  • Ultra Balls are by far the most effective against Ultra Beasts, and almost useless against other Pokémon.
  • Shiny Pokémon: Legendary Pokémon and Ultra Beasts have the normal rate, determined when the battle starts. So you can reload your game in front of them as many times as needed.
