Pokémon Conquest is unlike any other Pokémon game. There are no levels and no Poké Balls: you conquer kingdoms with warlords who are linked to their Pokémon. Here are the rules you need to know to get off to a good start, based on Serebii.

The Ransei map

The game unfolds month by month. Each turn, every warlord under your command can act: explore a wild location to recruit, buy items, train, or launch an assault on a neighboring kingdom, marked with a red flag. You can send at most six warlords into a battle. Then the enemy kingdoms take their turn, and they may attack you in return.

Each kingdom has its shops, its wild locations and sometimes a unique spot, such as Aurora’s Blacksmith, who makes one item out of two others. Wild locations can be upgraded for gold at the Bank: at level 2, a new location opens up, and the wild Pokémon become stronger.

Battles

  • Each warlord brings only one Pokémon, and each Pokémon has only one move, with its own range and area shape.
  • Movement depends on the Pokémon; Flying Pokémon can cross certain obstacles.
  • The type chart from the main series applies.
  • Each warlord has a warrior skill that can be used in battle, and each Pokémon has an Ability.
  • Each battlefield has its own objectives (defeat all the enemies, capture the flags) and its own traps.

Each Pokémon has a Link percentage with its warlord. It rises as you fight: a little against wild Pokémon, more against warlords, and a lot in the big kingdom battles. It improves the Pokémon’s HP, Attack, Defense and evasion. Its cap depends on type affinities: most Pokémon top out between 40 and 98%, but each warlord has up to three perfect partners, with whom they reach 100%. A golden warlord can even evolve when their Link with their perfect partner is very high.

Recruiting

Defeated warlords may offer to join you if you won in fewer than four turns, or without taking any damage. Wild Pokémon can be linked to a warlord with the “Link” option: stand next to them and succeed at a small rhythm game by pressing A. A medal above the Pokémon shows compatibility: gold (80 to 100%), silver (60 to 80%), bronze (40 to 60%) or a red cross.
