Released on December 7, 2018 on Nintendo Switch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brings together every fighter in the series’ history, and almost all of its stages. Pokémon is more present than ever: eight fighters, seven stages, dozens of Pokémon in Poké Balls and more than 160 spirits. This guide looks at the Pokémon side of the game.

Eight Pokémon fighters

All the veterans return: Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Lucario, Greninja, but also Pichu, absent since Melee, and Brawl’s Pokémon Trainer, with Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard. The newcomer, Incineroar, is a slow but formidable wrestler. See the Pokémon fighters.

Nearly every Pokémon stage

Saffron City, Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2, Spear Pillar, Prism Tower and the Unova and Kalos Pokémon Leagues are all here; only Melee’s Poké Floats are missing. See the stages and items.

The spirits

Trophies give way to spirits, which you collect and equip to power up your fighters. More than 160 come from the Pokémon universe, from Pokémon to Trainers. See the Pokémon spirits.

The verdict

Ultimate is the most complete and generous entry in the series, and the richest for Pokémon fans. Its eight fighters cover every generation up to Alola.
