Pokémon GO is played by walking… and by playing together. Your buddy Pokémon accompanies you and earns you Candy, your friends send you Gifts, and you trade Pokémon to complete your Pokédex. These are all mechanics that save you precious time.

The buddy Pokémon

From your profile, choose a buddy Pokémon: it accompanies you on the map and earns you a Candy every time you cover a certain distance together. That distance depends on the species:

  • 1 km158 Pokémon, par exemple Chenipan, Chrysacier, Papilusion, Aspicot, Coconfort, Dardargnan
  • 3 km486 Pokémon, par exemple Bulbizarre, Herbizarre, Florizarre, Salamèche, Reptincel, Dracaufeu
  • 5 km223 Pokémon, par exemple Onix, Kicklee, Tygnon, Leveinard, M. Mime, Insécateur
  • 20 km82 Pokémon, par exemple Artikodin, Électhor, Sulfura, Mewtwo, Mew, Raikou

By feeding it, playing with it, battling or discovering new places together, you earn hearts that raise your bond up to the Best Buddy rank. Some Pokémon even need these hearts to evolve, like Eevee into Sylveon.

Friends

Add friends using their Trainer Code. Every day, one interaction (exchanging a Gift, battling together in a Raid, trading a Pokémon) advances your friendship. It takes 1 day to become Good Friends, 7 days for Great Friends, 30 days for Ultra Friends and 90 days for Best Friends.

  • Gifts, collected from PokéStops, can be sent to your friends. They contain items and sometimes 7 km Eggs.
  • The friendship bonus increases your damage in Raids when you battle together, and gives you extra Poké Balls to catch the Boss.
  • The stronger your friendship, the less special trades cost in Stardust.

Trades

You can trade a Pokémon with a friend who is nearby. A regular trade costs 100 Stardust. Special trades (Legendary Pokémon, Shiny Pokémon, or Pokémon missing from your Pokédex) cost much more and are limited to one per day.

  • The Pokémon you receive has its IVs rerolled: a trade can improve… or worsen a Pokémon.
  • A trade earns you Candy, even more if the two Pokémon were caught far from each other.
  • Some Pokémon evolve for free after a trade:

Lucky Pokémon

During a trade, the Pokémon you receive has a chance to become Lucky: it gets guaranteed good IVs (at least 12 out of 15 in every stat) and powering it up costs half as much Stardust. The odds increase with Pokémon caught a long time ago, and become certain between “Lucky Friends,” a status that sometimes appears as you interact with a Best Friend.
