HeartGold and SoulSilver follow the storyline of Pokémon Gold and Silver: sixteen Badges, Johto then Kanto, and Red at the summit of Mt. Silver. This page serves as the contents of the walkthrough: it retraces the adventure stage by stage, points out what changes in the remakes and links to our detailed walkthrough on the Johto mini-site.

What changes in the remakes

  • The Pokémon that follows you: the first Pokémon in your party walks behind you; talk to it to find out its mood.
  • The Gyms have all been transformed and offer new puzzles.
  • The Kimono Girls and Suicune: as in Crystal, Eusine tracks Suicune; the Kimono Girls of Ecruteak City play a key role in making the legendary Pokémon of your version, Ho-Oh or Lugia, appear before the League.
  • Four Rocket executives, Archer, Petrel, Ariana and Proton, run Team Rocket’s operations.
  • New locations: the Pokéathlon near the National Park, the Battle Frontier west of Olivine City, and the Safari Zone west of Cianwood City via Routes 47 and 48.
  • The Johto Pokédex has 256 Pokémon, compared with 251 in the original versions.

The Pokémon League

The Elite Four consists of Will (Psychic), Koga (Poison), Bruno (Fighting) and Karen (Dark); the Champion is Lance, the Dragon specialist. You need all eight Johto Badges to challenge them; after you have all sixteen Badges, their teams are much stronger. See The Elite Four and the Champion (in French) and our Elite Four guide.

Kanto and Mt. Silver

After the League, the S.S. Aqua takes you to Kanto, where eight new Badges await. That is the subject of our page Kanto and Red.
