After the Johto League, HeartGold and SoulSilver open a second adventure: the Kanto region, three years after the events of Red and Blue, with eight new Badges, locations restored compared to Gold and Silver, and a final legendary battle against Red. Here is how to go about it.

Kanto, the second region of the adventure, and its eight Gyms.

Getting to Kanto

After beating Lance, take the S.S. Aqua in Olivine City: it drops you off in Vermilion City. Later, the Magnet Train links Goldenrod City to Saffron City, but you must first return the stolen part to the Power Plant. The S.S. Aqua and Magnet Train trips trigger a 3D cutscene.

The eight Gyms of Kanto

The Kanto Gyms can be challenged in a fairly free order, which explains why the teams are at similar levels. Several Leaders do, however, require a preliminary step.

Janine, Koga’s daughter, has taken over the Fuchsia City Gym. Misty’s Gym stays empty until the stolen part from the Power Plant has been found. Blaine, deprived of his Cinnabar Island Gym, which was destroyed by an eruption, has settled in the Seafoam Islands. Blue, Red’s rival, only opens his Gym last. Rematches through the Pokégear

New in the remakes: the Gym Leaders of Johto and Kanto give you their phone number if you find them at certain places on certain days. You can then call them to arrange a rematch, which takes place at the Saffron Dojo. Their teams then reach Levels 50 to 60. The conditions are detailed in our articles The Johto Gym Leaders and The Kanto Gym Leaders.

Red, at the summit of Mt. Silver

Once you have all sixteen Badges, Professor Oak gives you HM08 Rock Climb and allows you to enter Mt. Silver, via the Route 26 guard gate and Route 28. At the summit, in the hail, Red, the hero of Red and Blue, awaits. He does not say a word. His team ranges from Level 80 to Level 88, with his Pikachu holding a Light Ball, but also Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise, and he is the strongest trainer in the game. Your victory earns you 16,800 Poké Dollars and a Legend Ribbon for every Pokémon in your party.
