Announcement and release

The games were announced on 29 May 2018 with a trailer shown on the official Pokémon channel. They were released worldwide on 16 November 2018. The adventure takes place in Kanto, with two new Pokémon, Meltan and Melmetal, first revealed in Pokémon GO.

The editions

Two limited-edition Nintendo Switch bundles accompanied the release: each contains a Pikachu & Eevee edition console, one of the two games preinstalled and the Poké Ball Plus. The Poké Ball Plus, also sold separately, works as a controller and contains the Mythical Pokémon Mew, which can be transferred only once. It also works with Pokémon GO, much like the Pokémon GO Plus.

Updates

Update 1.0.2 notably fixes the Pokédex registration of Pokémon received through Mystery Gift, the swapping of two marks in the Judge function, and issues with Link Trade and code entry.

Sales

According to The Pokémon Company, the games sold over three million copies in the first week, making it the fastest launch of the Switch at the time. Nintendo reports 10.63 million copies as of 31 March 2019.

Differences between the versions

The partner changes (Pikachu or Eevee), as do several exclusive Pokémon. An NPC in Vermilion City gives a single Arcanine or Persian depending on the version. See our article Pokémon exclusive to one Let’s Go game.
