The Wii U version of Pokkén Tournament received several updates in 2016, devoted to fixing bugs and balancing the fighters. Unlike the arcade version, it never received new fighters. Here is what they changed.
The first patch (April 2016)
Less than a month after launch, a first patch fixed a series of bugs spotted by players:
- Pikachu Libre no longer passes through opponents pinned against a wall;
- Sceptile no longer falls through the floor when chaining two of its attacks;
- Mewtwo has a harder time hitting airborne opponents with Confusion, and lands fewer critical hits with it;
- Shadow Mewtwo has a longer charge time on one of his attacks and his infinite combos have been removed;
- Reshiram’s Blue Flare, the Support Pokémon of the Reshiram and Cresselia set, goes from 132 to 102 damage points;
- Umbreon’s Snarl now works even if the opponent has called Pachirisu.

Update 1.3 (June 2016)
The third update, at 215 MB, was mandatory to access online services. It changed the moves, effects and sometimes damage of nearly every fighter, from Lucario to Shadow Mewtwo, as well as several Support Pokémon, including Snivy, Magneton, Quagsire, Diglett, Yveltal, Latios and Cresselia. And after that?
The fighters added to Japanese arcade cabinets in the second half of 2016, Darkrai, Scizor, Croagunk and Empoleon, never came to Wii U. They were reserved for Pokkén Tournament DX, announced in June 2017. See The arcade version.
Online services
The Wii U Nintendo eShop closed in March 2023: the digital version of the game can no longer be purchased. The Wii U’s online services then ended on April 8, 2024, which put an end to online battles in the Wii U version. The game can still be played solo and with two players locally. To play online, you need to move to Pokkén Tournament DX on Switch.
