Beginner Mission: “Don’t Fear Failure”
Talk to the Ranger in the Lyra Forest to get a first description of his Pokémon that isn’t all that helpful. In fact, not very precise.
First, move forward into the field in front of you and capture a little Chikorita… go back to him, as he tells you it’s not that Pokémon, giving you an even vaguer description… Luckily, we have the solution!
When you go back into the forest, a new Pokémon has appeared: Taillow.
By capturing the little Taillow, which is generally very easy to catch (a few little turns and then off it goes), you manage to capture his Pokémon. Go show him and be proud of yourself!
The mission isn’t actually over, as you’re warned that trees have caught fire. It’s an excellent time to learn how to use Poké Assists. Capture a Mudkip in this forest, then use its ability to put out the tree that’s still burning once the Chief Ranger has finished his little explanation.
So, was it that hard? No! Mission accomplished, congratulations, you’re now a fully fledged Ranger. Now, how about we get started on some real missions?

You’re now a Pokémon Ranger, but something’s missing, like a companion to keep you from feeling lonely…
Leave the base, then watch the scene unfold before your eyes… the Taillow attacks the Minun you met earlier.
By capturing the Taillow again, you’ll finally find your partner: Minun or Plusle!
What’s the use of this little mouse? That’s what they’ll explain to you at the Ranger base, which will show you how to use it.
In short, it gives you a useful Poké Assist: paralyzing Pokémon during captures.
A new bar appears in your menu, the energy of your Minun’s Thunder Cage attack. The further you progress in the game, the bigger it gets, and the tougher and longer-lasting your paralyzing attacks will be: it’s a formidable, even indispensable, Pokémon.
You’re asked to go say hello to the Fearow on the upper floor of the Ranger base, which you obviously do like a good Samaritan. Go back down to the ground floor of the base, then get a new mission from the Chief Ranger: escorting the professor to Fall City. A delicate mission, as you’re about to see.
