Once you have won every cup and cleared the Gym Leader Castle, a cave opens southeast of the stadium: your rival is waiting there with three legendary Pokémon. Beating him unlocks Round 2, and beating him again afterwards earns one last gift. Here are his teams and the game’s rewards.

The battle against the rival

The rival uses only three Pokémon, Mewtwo, Lugia and Ho-Oh, but you can field six. The Sleep and Freeze clauses do not apply.
