The Crown Tundra is the second part of the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, released in October 2020. It opens up the Crown Tundra, a vast cold region south of Postwick, inspired by Scotland. Its theme is exploration: under the leadership of the eccentric Peony, you lead three expeditions in search of legendary Pokémon, and you explore the Max Lair. Here is the complete walkthrough for the expansion.
Arrival and the Max Lair
With the Expansion Pass, take the train at Wedgehurst Station to the Crown Tundra. There you meet Peony and his daughter Peonia. Peonia runs off into the Max Lair; Peony follows her without protection, and you find yourself on your first Dynamax Adventure to find him. Realizing that his daughter doesn’t want to explore with him, Peony offers to team up with you and hands you, one by one, three Legendary Clues: each one launches an expedition.
Freezington, in the north of the Crown Tundra, serves as a base. Peony rents a house there. Once you are League Champion, he gives you a Master Ball.
Expedition 1: Calyrex, the King of Bountiful Harvests
- In Peony’s house, take the Wooden Crown and place it on the village’s unfinished statue. Calyrex, the forgotten King of Bountiful Harvests, takes possession of Peony’s body and asks you to restore its glory.
- The village chief sends you to his books: there you learn of the existence of the king’s two steeds. Calyrex asks you for carrots, its mount’s favorite food.
- Trade eight Dynite Ore for Carrot Seeds with a villager, then choose where to plant them: in the snowy field to get Glastrier, at the Old Cemetery to get Spectrier. This choice is final.
- The steed lured to the village runs off after a battle. Peony gives you the Reins of Unity. At the Crown Shrine, at the highest point of the Crown Tundra, place the carrot in the old stable and hide: Calyrex tames its mount.
- Calyrex challenges you in its fused form, at level 80: Ice Rider with Glastrier, Shadow Rider with Spectrier. This battle is only possible once you are League Champion. If you knock it out, you return to just before the battle: you must catch it to finish the story.
The Reins of Unity then let you separate Calyrex from its steed, and fuse them again.
Expedition 2: the Legendary Titans
Legendary Clue 2 sets you on the trail of the five Titans. Each one sleeps in ruins that open under a specific condition; inside, you have to light up all the floor tiles to wake it.
| Pokémon | Location | To open the door |
|---|---|---|
| Regirock | Rock Peak Ruins, southeast of Giant’s Bed | A lead Pokémon holding an Everstone |
| Regice | Iceberg Ruins, west of Snowslide Slope | A Cryogonal at the head of your team |
| Registeel | Iron Ruins, west of Giant’s Bed | Whistle in front of the door |
| Regieleki or Regidrago | Split-Decision Ruins, Three-Point Pass | Regirock, Regice and Registeel in your team; reproduce the symbol of the chosen Titan on the tiles |
All are level 70. At the Split-Decision Ruins, you can only take one of the two new Titans.
Finally, at Giant’s Bed, a Den refuses Wishing Pieces: it is the Den of Regigigas. With Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki and Regidrago in your team, interact with it to start a raid against Regigigas, at level 100. Since you can only catch one of the two new Titans per game, a trade is needed to bring all five together.
Expedition 3: the Galarian birds
At Dyna Tree Hill, in the middle of Ballimere Lake, you surprise Galarian Moltres and Zapdos in the middle of a fight, interrupted by Galarian Articuno. The three fly off. Each one then hides in a different region:
| Pokémon | Type | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Galarian Articuno | Psychic/Flying | Crown Tundra: it flies, then creates mirages; find the real one |
| Galarian Zapdos | Fighting/Flying | Wild Area: it runs, and you have to catch up with it |
| Galarian Moltres | Dark/Flying | Isle of Armor: it circles the island; position yourself in front of its path |
All three are level 70 and cannot be obtained as Shiny Pokémon in the game. Save before each encounter.
Sonia’s footprints and Keldeo
Sonia asks you to find the footprints of three legendary Pokémon scattered across the Crown Tundra. After fifty footprints of the same Pokémon, it appears:
All are level 70, and Sonia gives you Exp. Candies for each completed series. With all three in your team, prepare a curry on the small islet in Ballimere Lake, next to an empty pot: Keldeo appears, at level 65.
Dynamax Adventures
In the Max Lair, you explore a cave as a team of four, with other players or support Trainers, using rental Pokémon. At every fork, you choose your path; defeated Dynamax Pokémon can be caught and replace your rental Pokémon. At the end awaits a legendary Pokémon or an Ultra Beast from previous generations. On the way out, you keep only one of the Pokémon you caught.
- More than forty legendaries and Ultra Beasts can be encountered, including Mewtwo, Giratina, Solgaleo or Lunala. Each can only be caught once.
- Peonia sells, in exchange for Dynite Ore, direct access to the legendary of your choice.
- The Shiny odds are fixed and are decided at the moment you choose the Pokémon to keep.
- After three expeditions, an endless mode opens up: you keep no Pokémon, but you earn more Dynite Ore.
- A scientist gives you a Poipole after five completed expeditions against an Ultra Beast.
Dynite Ore can be traded with the Max Lair’s merchant for rare items, including Ability Patches and Ultra Balls. Once all the Crown Tundra quests are complete, you can challenge Peony in the Lair.
What’s new
The Crown Tundra is the first place in the series where you catch Fossil Pokémon in the wild. The expansion also adds many Pokémon absent from the base game, notably legendaries from previous generations. The full list of legendaries from Sword, Shield and the two expansions is on our page Legendary and Mythical Pokémon.
