The Sword and Shield base game has only three legendaries, but the two Expansion Pass parts add dozens more. This page sums up where and how to get each of them, in the base game, on the Isle of Armor, in the Crown Tundra and in Dynamax Adventures.
The base game
| Pokémon | Location | Level | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eternatus | Top of the Hammerlocke Stadium tower | 60 | End of the story, after its Eternamax form; capture guaranteed |
| Zacian (Sword) Zamazenta (Shield) | Top of the Hammerlocke Stadium tower | 70 | After the League, at the end of the Sordward and Shielbert episode |
| Type: Null | Battle Tower, Wyndon | 50 | Given after the League |
Zacian and Zamazenta exist in two forms. Their base form, Hero of Many Battles, is the one you meet in the Slumbering Weald. When they hold the Rusted Sword or the Rusted Shield, they take their Crowned Sword or Crowned Shield form, and their move Iron Head becomes Behemoth Blade or Behemoth Bash. The details are in our article Catching Zacian and Zamazenta; for Eternatus, see Catching Eternatus.

Dynamax Adventures
At the bottom of the Max Lair, in the Crown Tundra, the legendary Pokémon and Ultra Beasts of previous generations await you: notably Kanto’s Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres, Mewtwo, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Giratina, Cresselia, the Forces of Nature and the Unova swords of justice, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma and the Ultra Beasts. Some are version-exclusive, but an online expedition with a player of the other version lets you encounter them. Each can only be caught once.
Mythical Pokémon
No Mythical Pokémon can be encountered in the game. Mew is obtained with the Poké Ball Plus accessory. The others, such as Zarude, were distributed during events that have now ended, or arrive by transfer from Pokémon HOME for compatible species. Our article Pokémon and item distributions keeps track of them.
Catching tips
- Save before every fixed legendary.
- Bring False Swipe and a move that puts to sleep or paralyzes.
- Timer Balls become very effective after about ten turns; Dusk Balls work at night and in caves.
- In Dynamax Adventures, catches always succeed: pick the Ball for its looks, for example a Luxury Ball or a Love Ball.
