The Isle of Armor is the first part of the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, released in June 2020. It opens up the Isle of Armor, a large island inspired by the Isle of Man, where the former Master Mustard runs a dojo. There you train the legendary Pokémon Kubfu until it evolves. Here is the complete walkthrough of the expansion and everything it adds.

The Isle of Armor, an island of beaches, forests, swamps and dunes.

Getting to the Isle of Armor

Once you have bought the Expansion Pass and updated the game, head to Wedgehurst Station: a train takes you to the Isle of Armor. The expansion can be played during the main adventure, as soon as you have access to the station; trainers’ Pokémon scale up and become much stronger once the League is finished.

When you arrive, your rival for the expansion welcomes you at the Fields of Honor and challenges you: Klara in Sword, a Poison-type specialist, or Avery in Shield, a Psychic-type specialist.

RivalPokémon (before the League)
Klara (Sword)Skorupi Lv. 23, Galarian Weezing Lv. 24, Whirlipede Lv. 24, Galarian Slowbro Lv. 25 (Dynamax)
Avery (Shield)Galarian Ponyta Lv. 23, Swoobat Lv. 24, Kadabra Lv. 24, Galarian Slowbro Lv. 25 (Dynamax)

The Master Dojo

The dojo is run by Honey and her husband Mustard, Galar League Champion for eighteen years and Leon’s former mentor. Following a misunderstanding, they take you for a new student. After a first battle against Mustard, you receive the dojo uniform. Another student offers you the Exp. Charm, which increases the experience your Pokémon gain.

The three trials

  1. Catch the Galarian Slowpoke that have escaped onto the island.
  2. Pick Max Mushrooms, mushrooms used to prepare Max Soup.
  3. Defeat your rival in a final battle, despite their repeated attempts to put a spoke in your wheels.

Once you have passed all three trials, Mustard entrusts you with Kubfu, a legendary Fighting-type Pokémon.

Kubfu and the Towers of Two Fists

Before it can evolve, Kubfu must earn your trust: you travel the island with it to specific spots indicated by Mustard. You then choose one of the two towers, each five floors high and filled with dojo disciples. At the top, Mustard battles you with his own Kubfu; clearing the tower makes yours evolve into Urshifu by means of a scroll.

The disciples in the towers use Pokémon matching their style: Psyduck, Krabby, Marill and Poliwhirl in the Tower of Waters; Zorua, Scraggy, Inkay and Krokorok in the Tower of Darkness.

After the story

  • A Kanto starter Pokémon: Mustard offers you Bulbasaur or Squirtle, able to Gigantamax. Honey also gives you five pieces of Armorite Ore.
  • Max Soup: prepared in the dojo kitchen with Max Mushrooms, it gives the Gigantamax factor to Pokémon that can have it, including the Galar and Kanto starters.
  • The final battle against Mustard, once the League is finished: Mienshao, Luxray, Corviknight, Lycanroc, Kommo-o and his Urshifu, from level 73 to level 75.
  • The restricted battles at the dojo, with rules that limit which Pokémon you can use.
  • Dojo upgrades: by offering Watts to Honey, you unlock a hair salon, drink vending machines and, from one million Watts, a battle against Honey herself.

What’s new on the island

  • Galarian Slowpoke evolves into Galarian Slowbro with a Galarica Cuff, made from Galarica Twigs collected on the island. See our article How to get Galarian Slowbro.
  • The Alolan Diglett: a trainer at the Fields of Honor asks you to find his 151 Alolan Diglett hidden around the island. Depending on how many you find, he gives you Alolan Pokémon.
  • The Cram-o-matic, in the dojo lounge, combines several items to create a new one, such as Poké Balls or rare items.
  • The move tutors on the island teach new moves in exchange for Armorite Ore.
  • The weather changes every day at midnight and affects the Pokémon you encounter. It never snows there.

The Isle of Armor Pokédex, published on Pokémon France when the expansion came out, lists every species on the island, including many Pokémon absent from the base game. For the Gigantamax forms available, see Gigantamax Pokémon available on the Isle of Armor.
