Time, space, and a world turned upside down: for twenty years, Dialga, Palkia and Giratina have formed the heart of Sinnoh’s mythology. With Giratina about to return to Pokémon GO raids from October 28 to November 8, and Dialga and Palkia about to make their Max Battle debut on November 14 and 15, PF looks back at the original trio, from Spear Pillar to the Hisuian Origin Formes.

The myth of Arceus and the creation of the universe

It all begins with a myth. The books in the Canalave City library, in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, tell the story of the birth of the world according to the people of Sinnoh: in the midst of chaos, an egg appears, from which the first of all Pokémon hatches. This “original Pokémon,” which players identify as Arceus, gives birth to two beings, one master of time and the other of space. Three more creatures follow, the guardians of the lakes Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf, whose wishes give rise to matter and spirit. Its work done, the creator falls into a deep sleep.

According to legend, it was Spear Pillar, ruins perched at the summit of Mt. Coronet, that witnessed the birth of the trio. But the books only speak of two dragons. It takes Pokémon Platinum for Cynthia, Sinnoh’s Champion, to lift the veil on the third: a Pokémon as powerful as the other two, whose name was never to be spoken and which lurks in a world on the other side of ours. This outcast is Giratina, whom fans readily associate with antimatter, a mirror to Dialga’s time and Palkia’s space.

Each has a distinct identity, which the games translate into types, moves, and exclusive items:

  • Dialga, the Temporal Pokémon: Steel and Dragon types, signature move Roar of Time, signature item the Adamant Orb (which boosts its Steel- and Dragon-type moves by 20%).
  • Palkia, the Spatial Pokémon: Water and Dragon types, signature move Spacial Rend, signature item the Lustrous Orb.
  • Giratina, the Renegade Pokémon: Ghost and Dragon types, signature move Shadow Force, signature item the Griseous Orb, which lets it take its Origin Forme outside the Distortion World.

Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum: Cyrus, the Red Chain, and the Distortion World

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (2006 in Japan, 2007 in Europe), the story rests entirely on this myth. Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic, dreams of a world free of all spirit. To achieve it, he has the Red Chain forged at Team Galactic’s Veilstone building from the power of the lake guardians, captured at Lake Verity, Lake Acuity, and Lake Valor. Once the seal of Spear Pillar is broken, he summons Dialga in Diamond, or Palkia in Pearl.

The player then faces Mars and Jupiter in a Double Battle alongside their rival, then Cyrus himself. The lake guardians, freed earlier by the player, dispel the distortions, the Red Chain falls apart, and the version’s legendary Pokémon awaits the player, catchable at Lv. 47. The Adamant Orb or the Lustrous Orb can then be picked up deep in the ruins. Giratina, for its part, hides at the very back of Turnback Cave, a maze of chambers reached from Sendoff Spring, east of Route 214, once you have the National Pokédex.

Platinum, Giratina’s chapter

Pokémon Platinum (2008 in Japan, May 22, 2009 in Europe) changes the game and puts Giratina on the cover, in a brand-new Origin Forme. This time, Cyrus uses two Red Chains, one of them a copy made by his henchmen, to summon Dialga and Palkia at the same time. Giratina then bursts out and drags the leader of Team Galactic into the Distortion World. Guided by Cynthia and helped by the lake guardians, the player ventures in, defeats Cyrus, and can catch Giratina at Lv. 47 before returning to the entrance of Turnback Cave. After the League, the Griseous Orb can be recovered in that same world, and both Dialga and Palkia can be encountered at Spear Pillar.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, an event Arceus opened the Sinjoh Ruins, where you chose one of the three dragons, delivered with its orb. These distributions are covered in our history of Mythical Pokémon distributions in France.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, back to Sinnoh

Released on November 19, 2021 on Nintendo Switch, the remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl follow the 2006 story faithfully. Dialga waits at Spear Pillar in Brilliant Diamond and Palkia in Shining Pearl, both at Lv. 47, while Altered Forme Giratina is caught at Lv. 70 at the back of Turnback Cave. The remakes also let you obtain the Griseous Orb after the adventure, as explained in our guide to Giratina and the Griseous Orb.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus and the Origin Formes

Released on January 28, 2022, Pokémon Legends: Arceus travels back in time to Hisui, the ancient name of Sinnoh. Spear Pillar is still the Temple of Sinnoh there, built to worship Arceus, and the region is divided between two clans: Adaman’s Diamond Clan, which worships the master of time, and Irida’s Pearl Clan, which reveres the master of space. A spatio-temporal rift tears across the sky and sows unrest throughout the region.

This is the game in which Dialga and Palkia reveal their Origin Forme for the first time, bulkier and inspired by the silhouette of the creator. At the summit of Mt. Coronet, the player must calm the raging dragon before catching it with the Origin Ball, a unique Ball handed over by Professor Laventon and made from Origin Ore and the remains of the Red Chain. Two new items, the Adamant Crystal and the Lustrous Globe, then let you switch between the two forms.

Giratina is not left out. After the main adventure, the mysterious Volo reveals his hand and battles the player, before Giratina itself joins the fray and takes its Origin Forme in the middle of the fight. You then have to track it down in Turnback Cave, on the Cobalt Coastlands, to catch it and receive the Griseous Core, the Hisuian equivalent of the Griseous Orb. It is also after this battle that the path to the Hall of Origin opens, where Arceus waits. Every step is detailed in our guide to catching all the Legendary Pokémon in Legends: Arceus.

  • Origin Forme Dialga: 7.0 m and 850 kg, compared with 5.4 m and 683 kg in its normal form.
  • Origin Forme Palkia: 6.3 m and 660 kg, compared with 4.2 m and 336 kg.
  • Origin Forme Giratina: 6.9 m and 650 kg, compared with 4.5 m and 750 kg in Altered Forme. It loses its legs and swaps Pressure for Levitate.

The trio in the movies and the anime

The three dragons carried an entire movie trilogy on their own, released in Japan between 2007 and 2009:

  • Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai (2007 in Japan, aired in France on August 10, 2008): the clash between Dialga and Palkia opens a rift above Alamos Town, whose residents blame Darkrai. It is the melody “Oración,” played from the Temporal Tower, that finally calms the two legendary Pokémon.
  • Pokémon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior (2008 in Japan, aired in France on March 10, 2009): furious at the damage done to the Reverse World, Giratina attacks Dialga, while Ash teams up with a capricious Shaymin against the fearsome Zero, who wants to seize the Reverse World.
  • Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life (2009 in Japan, aired in France on December 3, 2009): in Michina Town, Dialga sends Ash and his friends into the past to repair an ancient betrayal, before the trio joins forces against Arceus’s wrath.

In the anime, the Team Galactic arc culminates in season 12, “DP Galactic Battles,” with the episode “A Battle for Life!”: Cyrus summons Dialga and Palkia at Spear Pillar, and it takes the intervention of Ash, his friends, and Cynthia to prevent the birth of his new world, in which he vanishes. The Pokémon Generations mini-series revisits the scene in the episode “The New World,” where Giratina this time frees Dialga and Palkia from Cyrus’s grip, faithful to the story of Platinum.

Their stats and types in one table

The three dragons share an identical base stat total of 680 points. The Origin Formes do not change this total: they simply redistribute the points.

In plain terms, Dialga’s Origin Forme trades some Attack for Special Defense, Palkia’s gains Speed, and Giratina goes from a defensive profile to an offensive one. All share the Pressure ability (and Telepathy as a Hidden Ability), except Origin Forme Giratina, which levitates.

Key takeaways

Born of the same myth, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are far more than cover legendaries: they embody the very structure of the Pokémon universe, between time, space, and the world hidden on the other side. In November, it all plays out in Pokémon GO: Giratina in raids until November 8, then Dynamax Dialga and Palkia on the weekend of November 14 and 15.
