A brand-new concept

It is the first game where you play as a Pokémon instead of commanding one. Chunsoft, the studio behind the Japanese Fushigi no Dungeon series, applies its formula here: randomly generated dungeons, explored turn by turn. The game already hints at the fourth generation, even before Diamond and Pearl, with Munchlax, Mime Jr., Bonsly, Weavile and above all Lucario, the legendary rescuer who gives his name to the highest rank.

The two versions

The story and the dungeons are the same. The Blue version uses the DS second screen for the map and team information, plus a few touch-screen features. A handful of Pokémon are exclusive to each version. See Differences and connections.

Around the game

  • A special episode of the anime, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team GO-Getters Out of the Gate!, tells the story of a human turned into a Squirtle, alongside Charmander and Chikorita.
  • A manga, Ginji’s Rescue Team, follows a human turned into a Torchic. It was given away in France with Nintendo Magazine.
  • The Wii U Virtual Console welcomed both versions in February 2016. The Wii U eShop closed in 2023.
  • The remake Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX was released on Nintendo Switch in March 2020.
