The rescue team’s beginnings
Tiny Woods and Thunderwave Cave
The hero wakes up transformed into a Pokémon. An earthquake has made a Caterpie fall into a pit: its mother, Butterfree, is looking for help. After this first rescue in Tiny Woods, the partner suggests that the hero found a rescue team. The first real mission is to save some Magnemite in Thunderwave Cave. You cannot recruit in Tiny Woods.
Mt. Steel: Skarmory
The partner shows you around Pokémon Square and points out the board at the Pelipper Post Office. You must complete two missions before the story resumes. The next day, Dugtrio asks you to save its child Diglett, kidnapped by Skarmory, at the summit of Mt. Steel. Skarmory is a Steel and Flying type: Fire and Electric moves are effective. The battle earns you 500 Poké, a Pecha Scarf and a Ginseng.
Sinister Woods: Team Meanies
The hero meets other rescue teams: Blastoise’s team, Shiftry’s team and the Gold-rank team of Alakazam, with Charizard and Tyranitar. Above all, the hero discovers Team Meanies: Gengar, Ekans and Medicham, who are only after profit. At the bottom of Sinister Woods, you have to face them. Use items: their attacks hurt late in the fight.
The legend of Ninetales
Silent Chasm and Mt. Thunder: Zapdos
Shiftry has disappeared while trying to rescue a pair of Jumpluff. The kidnapper is Zapdos, at the peak of Mt. Thunder. Zapdos is an Electric and Flying type, and its Pressure ability drains PP quickly: bring something to restore them. Ice and Rock moves are effective.
Great Canyon: the revelation
Alakazam, who sensed that the hero is no ordinary Pokémon, sends the hero to see Xatu at the end of the Great Canyon. Xatu confirms that the hero is a human, and that the disasters are said to be linked to the hero’s presence. Gengar spreads the news: according to a legend, a human who touched the tail of a Ninetales would be reborn as a Pokémon and upset the balance of the world. The hero and partner have to flee.
The escape: Mt. Blaze and Frosty Forest
Pursued by the entire village, the duo crosses Lapis Cave and Rock Path, then faces Moltres at the peak of Mt. Blaze and Articuno in the depths of Frosty Forest. Both have the Pressure ability. In between, you cannot go back to heal: stock up before leaving. Along the way, Absol joins the team.
Mt. Freeze: Ninetales
At the peak of Mt. Freeze, the duo finally meets the Ninetales of the legend. In the presence of Alakazam’s team, it clears up the suspicions: the hero is not the human of the prediction, and the earthquakes come from Groudon’s awakening.
Groudon and the meteorite
Uproar Forest
Back in the village, a team of Mankey agrees to upgrade the hero’s base after a battle in Uproar Forest. The base then takes the shape of the head of the Pokémon the hero has become.
Magma Cavern: Groudon
Alakazam’s team sends no more news. After the failure of a rescue team made up of Octillery, Blastoise and Golem, it is up to the hero to go. At the bottom of Magma Cavern, you must defeat Groudon, a Ground type: Water, Grass and Ice moves are very effective.
Sky Tower: Rayquaza
Xatu announces that a meteorite is hurtling toward the planet. Only Rayquaza can destroy it. In a dream, Gardevoir reveals the hero’s role and what victory will cost. The climb up Sky Tower has 25 floors, then 9 more to the summit. Rayquaza, a Dragon and Flying type, is doubly weak to Ice; Rock and Dragon moves are effective. It can paralyze and confuse, so bring items to cure those conditions.
The ending is moving, and the credits do not mark the end of the game. See After the end of the story.
