Red and Blue Rescue Team begin with a personality test. Depending on your answers, and on your gender, given by the last question, the game assigns you one of sixteen starter Pokémon. You then choose your partner. Here are the full table and the rules.

Eevee, Skitty and Chikorita can only be obtained by answering “girl” to the last question; Cyndaquil, Machop and Meowth only by answering “boy”.
The partner
- It cannot be the same type as your Pokémon.
- Eevee, Skitty, Meowth, Psyduck, Machop and Cubone cannot be chosen as partners.
Your choice changes a few details, such as the look of the base once the Mankey have upgraded it: it takes the shape of your Pokémon’s head.
After the story
Once the main story is finished, you can take any recruited Pokémon as your leader, and evolve your team, hero and partner included, at the Luminous Spring. See After the end of the story.
