In Gates to Infinity, there is no longer a personality quiz: you freely choose your Pokémon from five, then your partner from the same five. Here are the five starter Pokémon and the Pokémon that automatically join your team as the adventure goes on.

The five starter Pokémon
| Pokémon | Type | Starting moves |
|---|---|---|
| Pikachu | Electric | Fake Out, Thunder Shock, Growl, Tail Whip |
| Tepig | Fire | Tackle, Ember, Tail Whip, Covet |
| Snivy | Grass | Tackle, Vine Whip, Leer, Pursuit |
| Oshawott | Water | Tackle, Water Gun, Tail Whip, Assurance |
| Axew | Dragon | Scratch, Assurance, Leer, Focus Energy |
How to choose
- Balance the types between the hero and the partner: for example Oshawott and Tepig, or Snivy and Pikachu.
- Axew, a Dragon type, resists the very common Fire, Water, Grass and Electric moves.
- Pikachu benefits from Electric moves that are effective against the many Water and Flying Pokémon in the first dungeons.
Automatic recruitments
As the story goes on, several Pokémon join your team on their own: Emolga, Dunsparce, Virizion, Espeon and Umbreon, Hydreigon, then, under certain conditions, Keldeo and Meloetta. Our archive articles detail each condition: Automatic Recruitments and Automatic Recruitment of Legendaries.
The Pokémon in the game
The game features a large share of the Pokémon of Unova, as well as Pokémon from previous generations. Nearly forty Unova Pokémon are absent, including Purrloin, Pidove, Darumaka and Genesect. The list of common Pokémon is in our article List of Common Pokémon.
