At the start of Pokémon Quest, the player picks a first companion from five Pokémon: the three Kanto starters, Pikachu and Eevee. This choice is not final in the absolute, since every Pokémon can later be attracted through cooking, but it shapes the start of the adventure.

Melee or ranged
Every Pokémon in Quest fights either in melee or at range. A good team often mixes both: one or two sturdy Pokémon in front, and ranged attackers behind. Some side objectives even reward expeditions with only melee Pokémon, only ranged Pokémon, or a mix of the two. See Objectives.
Growing the team
From the very first expeditions, cooking lets you attract new Pokémon: from one to three per dish. A Pokémon also shows up at the base on its own every 22 hours. See Cooking and recipes.
