Just starting Magikarp Jump? The game is simple, but a few choices matter: which rod to pick, when to challenge the league, how to spend coins and diamonds. Here is what you need to get off to a good start.

The Fishing Rod, at the heart of one of the game's events.

The game loop

  1. Catch a Magikarp. At the start, you choose between three rods, each of which gives a Magikarp with a different pattern, gender and stats.
  2. Feed it by tapping the food that appears in the pond.
  3. Train it: you have three training points, which recharge at a rate of one every thirty minutes.
  4. Challenge the league once it has reached its maximum level, or earlier if its HP exceeds that of the next opponent.
  5. It retires after a defeat or once the league is complete, and you start over with a more promising Magikarp, thanks to your Trainer Rank.

Trainer Rank

Every action earns experience for the trainer. Each new rank gives 10 diamonds, raises the maximum level of the Magikarp you catch afterwards, and unlocks new food and training. It is the real engine of progression: even a Magikarp that fails moves your rank forward.

Eight tips

  1. Tap every berry: it is the most reliable source of HP.
  2. Upgrade the Oran Berry first: it appears the most often.
  3. Don’t waste training points: use them as soon as they are full.
  4. Collect the treasures that appear every five levels.
  5. Beat the Friend League quickly to get the Light Ball and Pikachu’s support.
  6. Spend your diamonds on decorations: their bonuses are permanent.
  7. Archive patterns: each new pattern earns 10 diamonds, once the Magikarp is above 70% of its maximum level.
  8. Don’t get too attached: Pidgeotto, Voltorb or an evolution into Gyarados can end your champion’s career.
