Pokkén Tournament DX can also be played with two players, on the same console, on two consoles side by side or online. The DX version added group matches and replays. Here are all the ways to face other players.
Two players on one console
Local Battle is played by two players on a single screen, in two ways:
- Classic shared screen: a single view, with player 1 in the foreground and player 2 facing the camera.
- Split screen: each player has their own view. The game then runs at 30 frames per second for each player, instead of 60.
Two Joy-Con are enough, so you can play anywhere in handheld or tabletop mode.
Wireless battle
Two Nintendo Switch consoles, each with the game, can face each other in local wireless play. You can search for a battle or create one, with the same rules as Solo Battle: Basic Battle, Extra Battle or Team Battle.
Online play
| Mode | How it works |
|---|---|
| Friendly Battles | Against anyone, your friends or players who have your battle code |
| Ranked Battles | Rank points based on your results, for a worldwide ranking |
| Group Matches | Groups created for a set period, limited to a skill level (all, casual, beginners, experienced…) or to your friends |
| Official Group Matches | Cups organized by the publishers, with titles to win |
| Replays | Your battles and other people’s, to rewatch and filter by Pokémon or rank |
Official Group Matches
From November 2017 to October 2018, official cups were held almost every two weeks, alternating between Basic Battle and Team Battle. Each one earned a participation title, and ranking titles for the top players. The 1.1.0 updates added the special titles tied to rankings in these matches.
Event Mode
Designed for tournaments, Event Mode links two consoles over a wired network, with LAN adapters, to guarantee a stable connection. You can set the number of round points, whether skill levels are enabled, and the stage (fixed, random or Ferrum Stadium). Since update 1.1.0, it also supports Team Battle.
Pokkén in competition
Pokkén Tournament has been part of the Pokémon Championships, The Pokémon Company’s official tournament series, since 2016 on Wii U. Our original articles from the time cover the 2016 European National Championships, the tournaments at Japan Expo 2016 and WE Game 2018. HORI’s official wired controller is the most widely used in tournaments: see Controllers, amiibo and codes.
