Two years after its launch, Pokémon TCG Pocket is entering a new dimension. On October 20, The Pokémon Company unveiled Dual Fusion, the expansion that opens Series C on Thursday, October 29 and introduces dual-type cards for the first time. It comes with a new special booster format and an anniversary program running through December.

Mega Mewtwo X ex and Mega Greninja ex, the first dual-type Pokémon

Until now, every Pokémon card in Pocket showed a single type. Dual Fusion breaks that rule: two types now appear at the top of certain cards, and two Mega Evolutions lead the way. Mega Mewtwo X ex combines the Psychic and Fighting types, while Mega Greninja ex combines Water and Darkness.

The visuals published by The Pokémon Company already give an idea of their role:

  • Mega Mewtwo X ex (Basic Pokémon, 180 HP): its Double Impact attack does 100 damage, and 40 more if a Stadium is in play;
  • Mega Greninja ex (200 HP): Dark Splash does 100 damage and prevents the Defending Pokémon from retreating during the next turn;
  • like all Mega Evolution ex cards in Pocket, these two cards give the opponent 3 points when they are Knocked Out.

This dual typing promises new strategies: a single card will be able to benefit from effects that target either of its types. The detailed rules, especially for Weaknesses, will need to be checked in game as soon as it is released.

Pikachu, Dragonite and the Kanto starters in the spotlight

The expansion is not just its two headliners. Its two boosters feature Mega Mewtwo X and Pikachu, who gets a new Pikachu ex card (Pika Punch, Thundertail). Cards already shown also include Mew ex, Mega Dragonite ex and its 250-damage Draconic Meteor, as well as Fuecoco ex.

The Kanto trio returns in illustrated versions, each with an Ability: Venusaur (Solar Healing), Charizard (Blazing Aura) and Blastoise (Aqua Charge).

Special boosters and Pikachu missions for the 2nd anniversary

Another new feature is special boosters. They aren’t opened like regular boosters: you need special booster hourglasses, which recharge once a week. In return, every booster contains at least one ★ card. The first one, Special Booster: First Partners, will be available from October 31 to December 26 and will bring together cards of the starter Pokémon from all nine regions.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon TCG, the app is also launching the Pika Pika! Pikachu Missions, available from October 20 until October 20, 2027. Just log in on ten days to earn boosters made up solely of Pikachu cards, new accessories and an immersive-art Pikachu ex card exclusive to this event.

Key takeaways

Dual Fusion is the most structural update to Pocket since its launch: a new card cycle, a brand-new mechanic and a steady pace of events through the holidays. See you on October 29 to open the first boosters. Until then, there is still time to enjoy the Wonder Pick dedicated to Skyla and to brush up with our Mega Evolution guide.
