Shiny Pokémon, with their rare colors, are one of the great pleasures of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Good news: unlike in many games in the series, you can spot them directly in the wild here, before any battle, and a distinctive chime signals their presence. This page gathers the encounter rates, the Shiny Charm and the most effective methods for finding them.
Spotting a shiny Pokémon
A shiny Pokémon moves around the scenery like any other, just with alternate colors. When one appears near you, the game plays a chime and makes the Pokémon sparkle: turn the music off or down if you are hunting, so you don’t miss this signal. Then sneak up on it, crouching in the tall grass, and throw your Poké Ball without being noticed to maximize your chances of catching it.
Encounter rates
The base rate is 1 in 4,096, as in other recent games. It rises with the research level of the species in your Pokédex, with the Shiny Charm and, above all, during mass outbreaks:
| Situation | Wild Pokémon | Mass outbreak | Massive mass outbreak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | 1 in 4,096 | 26 in 4,096 (1 in 158) | 13 in 4,096 (1 in 316) |
| Research level 10 | 2 in 4,096 | 27 in 4,096 (1 in 153) | 14 in 4,096 (1 in 293) |
| Perfect research | 4 in 4,096 | 29 in 4,096 (1 in 142) | 16 in 4,096 (1 in 256) |
| Level 10 and Shiny Charm | 5 in 4,096 | 30 in 4,096 (1 in 137) | 17 in 4,096 (1 in 241) |
| Perfect and Shiny Charm | 7 in 4,096 | 32 in 4,096 (1 in 128) | 19 in 4,096 (1 in 216) |
The rate in a massive mass outbreak, per Pokémon, is lower than in a mass outbreak, but a massive mass outbreak spawns many more Pokémon: overall, it remains an excellent opportunity. Details in mass outbreaks.
The Shiny Charm
The Shiny Charm adds three rolls to every encounter. To receive it, you must show Professor Laventon a Pokédex with 238 entries at research level 10: Phione, Manaphy, Shaymin and Darkrai are not required, but Arceus’s entry must be complete. Catching is not enough; you have to complete the tasks. The method is in Pokédex tasks and ranks; see also our earlier article the Shiny Charm. Update 1.1.1 fixed a bug that could prevent you from receiving it.
The best methods
1. Mass outbreaks
This is the top method: a group of the same species, each with 26 extra rolls. When an outbreak is flagged on the map, head there, catch or defeat the Pokémon in the wave, then watch for the possible second wave. With the Daybreak update, massive mass outbreaks extended the principle to several species at once.
2. Raising the species’ research level
Research level 10, then perfect research, each add rolls for the species concerned. For a Pokémon you are hunting for a long time, completing its tasks is a worthwhile investment.
3. Coming back to an area often
Wild Pokémon respawn when you change area or as time passes. Areas rich in a given species, described in our area guides (Obsidian Fieldlands, Crimson Mirelands, Cobalt Coastlands, Coronet Highlands, Alabaster Icelands), let you multiply your encounters.
4. Space-time distortions
Distortions make Pokémon that can’t be found elsewhere appear for a few minutes: a good chance to run into rare species, shiny ones included. See space-time distortions.
Practical tips
- Stock up on Poké Balls, in particular Feather Balls and Heavy Balls depending on whether the Pokémon flies or not: recipes in crafting.
- Use stealth: a Pokémon that hasn’t noticed you is much easier to catch.
- Keep room in your boxes: a shiny Pokémon caught with a full party is sent to the pastures, not lost.
