As in every Mystery Dungeon game of the era, Explorers of Sky begins with a personality test. Your answers, including your answer to the last question, which sets your gender, determine the Pokémon you play. Sky adds five Pokémon to the Time and Darkness list. Here is the full table and the rules for choosing your partner.
The personality test
The questionnaire assigns a personality, such as Brave, Timid or Naughty, and each personality corresponds to a Pokémon. Unlike the 3DS entries, the result is fixed: to get the Pokémon you want, you have to answer accordingly or retake the test. Some Pokémon are only available for one gender.

The five newcomers are Vulpix, Eevee, Phanpy, Shinx and Riolu. To make room for Shinx, Sky replaces Luxray and its clan of Luxio, in Amp Plains, with Manectric and a clan of Electrike.
Choosing your partner
After the test, you freely choose your partner among the starter Pokémon, with two rules:
- it cannot share a type with your Pokémon;
- Meowth and Munchlax can only be chosen as partners: the hero cannot be either of them in Sky.
Choosing well
Every starter Pokémon can finish the adventure. A duo with complementary types makes things easier: a Water hero and a Grass partner, for example, cover each other’s weaknesses. Pokémon that evolve, like Eevee or Riolu, can only do so after the story. See After the end of the story.
