Since when has the game existed?

Pokémon TCG Pocket was released worldwide on October 30, 2024, after an early release in New Zealand in late September 2024.

Can you play it on Nintendo Switch or on a computer?

No, the game is only available on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

Do you need an internet connection?

Yes, the game requires a connection to work, including to open packs and play solo.

How do you back up your collection?

Link your Nintendo account from the game’s settings. It is essential for getting your cards back on a new phone.

Cards

Are Pocket cards the same as real cards?

No. Pocket has its own expansions and simplified rules. Some illustrations reuse cards from the classic TCG, but digital cards can only be used in the app.

Can you transfer your cards to Pokémon TCG Live or to real cards?

No, the collections are completely separate. For the physical game, see our classic TCG mini-site and its Academy.

Is a rare card stronger in battle?

No. Star or crown versions have exactly the same effects as the diamond version of the same Pokémon. See Packs and rarities.

Do older expansions disappear?

No, the standard expansions remain available. Only certain special packs, such as Deluxe Pack: Mega, are offered for a limited time.

How do you get a specific card?

There are several options: open the pack that contains it, use your Pack Points for the expansion, try a Wonder Pick or trade for it with a friend. See Trades.

Battles

How many cards do you need to play?

A deck has exactly 20 cards, with at most two copies of the same card. Rental decks let you play without owning the cards.

Why are there no Energy cards?

Pocket replaces Energy cards with the Energy Zone, which generates one Energy per turn from the types chosen for your deck. See Battle rules.

Can you play against your friends?

Yes, in a friendly battle, by adding the player to your friends list. Ranked Matches pit you against players from around the world.

How many points does a Mega Pokémon ex give?

Three points, which is an immediate win. A Pokémon ex gives two and a regular Pokémon gives one.

Safety and purchases

Can you buy or sell Pocket cards?

No. Cards cannot be sold and trades only happen between friends, in the game. Be wary of any offer of accounts or cards for money: it breaks the game’s rules and puts you at risk of losing your account.

How do you avoid accidental purchases?

Turn on your phone’s parental controls (App Store or Google Play) to require authorization for every in-app purchase.
