The Petit Cup is the tournament for small fry. It only accepts unevolved Pokémon from level 25 to 30, measuring no more than 2.0 m and weighing no more than 20 kg, with a total of 80 levels across your three fighters. Like the Pika Cup, it has a single division and eight opponents. It is one of the four tournaments of the Stadium.
Rules and eligible Pokémon
- Levels from 25 to 30, with the sum of your three chosen levels equal to or below 80.
- Only Pokémon that have not evolved are allowed: Pikachu is accepted, Raichu is not.
- Height of 2.0 m or less and weight of 20 kg or less; Mew is banned.
- Eight three-on-three matches, with the Sleep, Freeze and Self-KO Clauses.
The rental selection offers 45 Pokémon, all at level 25. It is the smallest rental catalog in the game, but it contains some real options: Pikachu, Poliwag, Exeggcute, Kabuto, Omanyte, Eevee, Dratini, Abra. A trio of level 25 Pokémon totals 75, under the limit of 80; with your own Pokémon, you can raise one of the three to level 30 as long as the other two stay at 25.
Round 1 opponents
Opponents show levels from 25 to 30, with an average of 26.2. A few Pokémon get a five-level head start, notably the Koffing and Exeggcute of the Super Nerd, the Kabuto and Eevee of the Lass, or the Dratini and Omanyte of the Pokémaniac. One fact stands out: the Super Nerd fields six Pokémon that all know Explosion or Self-Destruct.

Round 2 opponents
In Round 2, the trainers return with reshuffled teams (average level 26.5) and the Super Nerd swaps places with the Sailor, who is now third. The Super Nerd keeps the same six species at the same levels, and each one still knows Explosion: only his other moves change.

How to handle the Super Nerd
Explosion and Self-Destruct are Normal-type moves. A Ghost-type Pokémon is immune to them, and a Rock-type Pokémon takes only half the damage. In the Petit Cup rentals, Gastly is the only Ghost; Kabuto, Omanyte and Geodude are Rock-type. Pick them for the Super Nerd’s match, and keep in mind that an opponent’s Explosion is only worth something at a precise moment: better to let it blow up on a resistant Pokémon than on your best attacker.
Our recommended team
The opponents are mostly Poison and Water types (22% each), Normal (20%), then Grass (12%) and Flying (9%). Electric, Ice, Ground, Rock and Water moves hit most of these types super effectively, and Fighting does the same against Normal. Here is a complete rental team:
| Pokémon | Types | Lv. | Rental moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poliwag | Water | 25 | Surf, Skull Bash, Psywave, Hypnosis |
| Machop | Fighting | 25 | Karate Chop, Low Kick, Seismic Toss, Strength |
| Pikachu | Electric | 25 | Flash, Thunder, Thunder Wave, Slam |
| Diglett | Ground | 25 | Rock Slide, Dig, Bide, Sand Attack |
| Kabuto | Rock/Water | 25 | Ice Beam, Toxic, Take Down, Surf |
| Gastly | Ghost/Poison | 25 | Mega Drain, Night Shade, Self-Destruct, Confuse Ray |
- Poliwag: Surf against Fire, Ground and Rock types, Hypnosis to take an opponent out of the fight, and Skull Bash as a backup physical attack.
- Machop: Low Kick is a Fighting-type move, super effective against Normal types, which make up one opponent in five; Seismic Toss deals fixed damage equal to its level.
- Pikachu: Thunder against Water and Flying types, Thunder Wave to slow down the fastest ones.
- Diglett: Dig (a Ground-type move) against Poison, Electric and Fire types, Rock Slide (a Rock-type move) against Flying types.
- Kabuto: Surf and Ice Beam, with a Rock typing that takes half damage from Normal-type Explosions.
- Gastly: a Ghost type, immune to the Super Nerd’s Explosions; Night Shade deals fixed damage that does not depend on types.
Tips
- Check in the preview whether the opponent fields Pokémon that put others to sleep: Poliwag, Jigglypuff, Clefairy, Exeggcute or Oddish fall into this category. Only one of your three fighters can be asleep at a time, which limits the damage.
- Opposing level 30 Pokémon (Kabuto, Eevee, Dratini, Omanyte, among others) are concentrated with the Super Nerd, the Lass and the Pokémaniac: save your best fighters for those three trainers.
- A few opposing Pokémon know a one-hit KO move: Krabby with the Sailor and Nidoran♂ with the Pokémaniac in Round 1, Krabby and Goldeen (with the Jr. Trainer♀) in Round 2. These moves usually miss, but a fragile Pokémon in the front line runs an unnecessary risk.
- A Petit Cup trophy brings you closer to Mewtwo and registers your team in the Hall of Fame.
