The last two divisions of the Poké Cup are the tournament’s real exam: opponents go up to Level 55, teams are made up almost entirely of fully evolved Pokémon, and the finals line up Pokémon you rarely meet elsewhere, such as Dragonite or Articuno. The rules are those described in Poké Ball and Great Ball: Levels 50 to 55, a total of 155 for your three fighters, and Mewtwo and Mew banned. Finishing the Poké Cup earns you the Doduo GB Tower (see GB Tower).
What changes in the last two divisions
- The opponents’ average level barely rises (51.4 in Ultra Ball and 51.5 in Master Ball in Round 1), but the range widens: some Pokémon reach Level 54 or 55.
- The Old Man fields a Level 55 Dragonite in each of the four division-and-round combinations covered by this page. He is the last opponent in Round 1; in Round 2 he moves up to fifth position and the final goes to the Psychic.
- The Jugglers, Psychics and Tamers chain together Pokémon that put you to sleep or that know Counter. Do not attack them with Normal or Fighting moves once you have spotted a Counter in the opposing team.
Dragonite is a Dragon/Flying type: an Ice-type move deals four times normal damage to it, and a Rock-type move deals double. Among the Level 50 rental Pokémon, Jynx (Ice Punch), Lapras and Articuno (Ice Beam) are there for that purpose.
Ultra Ball Division, Round 1
Opponents range from Level 50 to Level 55. The Beauty fields a Level 55 Dugtrio; for the Rocker, Electrode reaches Level 54, as do the Channeler’s Cloyster and the Juggler’s Primeape. The Old Man’s final features Dragonite (55), Pinsir, Flareon, Nidoking, Golduck and an Electrode that knows Explosion.

Master Ball Division, Round 1
The last step of the Poké Cup demands your most complete team. The Old Man in the final fields Dragonite 55, Lapras 55, Articuno, Moltres, Jolteon and Tauros. Articuno and Lapras are both weak to Electric (double damage), which makes Thunderbolt a very profitable move in this battle. The Juggler remains the tournament’s trap: Hypno, Gengar and Jynx can put you to sleep, and Hypno, Magmar and Jynx know Counter.

Master Ball Division, Round 2
In Round 2, the Juggler kicks off the tournament with Alakazam, Kadabra, Mr. Mime, Electabuzz, Magmar and Clefable; four of them (Alakazam, Kadabra, Electabuzz and Magmar) know Counter. The Old Man, fifth, fields Dragonite and Snorlax at Level 55, along with Articuno, Arcanine, Pinsir and Electrode. The final is held by the Psychic (Alakazam, Hypno, Slowbro, Exeggutor, Starmie and Jynx). Pikachu‘s Surf ability is not obtained here but in the Prime Cup: see Surfing Pikachu.

Recommended team
For the Ultra Ball and Master Ball divisions, the difficulty comes from the finals. We suggest reusing the backbone of our team from the first half of the tournament and adding Ice-type attackers. The following rental Pokémon replace the least useful ones:
| Pokémon | Types | Lv. | Rental moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drowzee | Psychic | 50 | Hypnosis, Tri Attack, Dream Eater, Psychic |
| Jynx | Ice/Psychic | 50 | Lovely Kiss, Mega Punch, Ice Punch, Psychic |
| Articuno | Ice/Flying | 50 | Ice Beam, Substitute, Sky Attack, Razor Wind |
| Zapdos | Electric/Flying | 50 | Thunderbolt, Flash, Sky Attack, Thunder Wave |
| Rhyhorn | Ground/Rock | 50 | Earthquake, Fire Blast, Body Slam, Rock Slide |
| Lapras | Water/Ice | 50 | Ice Beam, Sing, Solar Beam, Body Slam |
- Articuno and Lapras put Ice moves (Ice Beam) within easy reach against Dragonite and against Flying, Grass or Ground Pokémon.
- Zapdos remains the best against Water and Flying Pokémon.
- Rhyhorn keeps Earthquake against Electric and Poison types, and Rock Slide against Flying types.
- Drowzee and Jynx provide sleep and Psychic attacks, but beware of the opposing team’s Counter when you use Tri Attack or Body Slam.
As in every cup, build your trio based on the preview of the six opposing Pokémon. If you won the previous matches without a KO, save your continue for the final.
