Pokémon gifts from the Gym Leader Castle

After each victory over the Rival, Professor Oak is waiting for you in his lab with a gift: a Pokémon drawn at random from eight. These are all Pokémon that the Game Boy games only give once per save file, forcing you to choose (starter Pokémon, Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan, Omanyte or Kabuto) or that are rare (Eevee).

Their original trainer is STADIUM, and their ID number is 02000. To receive them, plug a Red, Blue or Yellow cartridge into the Transfer Pak and open the lab: the Pokémon is deposited in a box on the cartridge. Since the draw is random, you sometimes have to replay the Elite Four and the Rival several times to get the one you want.

A Bulbasaur given by Professor Oak after the victory over the Rival (English version).

The Normal Box and the Luxury Box

These Pokémon hide a second gift, which only appears in the second generation. Traded to Pokémon Gold, Silver or Crystal, they arrive holding an item: a Normal Box if they were won in Round 1, a Luxury Box in Round 2. When opened, these boxes give a decoration for the hero’s room: the silver trophy for the Normal Box, the gold trophy for the Luxury Box. It is one of the few bridges between Stadium and the next generation.

The Psyduck that knows Amnesia

The reward that takes the longest to earn: a level 15 Psyduck that knows Scratch and Amnesia, a move that Psyduck cannot learn in the Game Boy games. It is handed over when all 151 species are registered in the Hall of Fame. Rental Pokémon count, but Mewtwo is never lent out and Mew only is in Round 2: you need at least one Mewtwo from a Game Boy cartridge, and patience to win a tournament with each of the 151 species. Original trainer STADIUM, number 02000.

Receiving the Psyduck that knows Amnesia (English version).

Surfing Pikachu

Winning the Master Ball division of the Prime Cup in Round 2 with six Pokémon from a cartridge, including a Pikachu, lets that Pikachu learn Surf. In Pokémon Yellow, it then unlocks the Pikachu’s Beach mini-game. All the conditions are detailed on our Surfing Pikachu page.

The Doduo and Dodrio GB Towers

The GB Tower lets you play Red, Blue and Yellow on your television. Two speeded-up versions unlock in Round 1: the Doduo Tower, which runs the game twice as fast, after the Poké Cup or the Prime Cup, and the Dodrio Tower, three times as fast, after both. They are ideal for training your Pokémon and for long walks through tall grass.

Mewtwo, Round 2 and Mew

The ten Stadium trophies and the Gym Leader Castle make Mewtwo appear. Defeating it rolls the credits, changes the title screen and opens Round 2, where Mew joins the rental Pokémon of the Prime Cup. Mewtwo, for its part, is never lent out.

Other unlockables

  • An alternate title screen appears when the Gym Leader Castle and the Master Ball division of the Prime Cup are completed.
  • The Ultra level of the mini-games, reserved for the best players of the Kids Club.
  • In the American version only, the Gallery gains hidden stickers when Mewtwo is beaten in Round 2.
