This is the first big turning point of the adventure. One night, a strange green and black Pokémon leads you across the rooftops to an Absol in the throes of Rogue Mega Evolution. That evening, you Mega Evolve your first Pokémon. Right afterward, Quasartico Inc. hands you a Mega Ring, Vinnie has you skip several ranks at once, and Team MZ sets itself a mission: calm every Rogue Mega Evolution Pokémon in the city.

Mission 8: Aiming for Rank V
Rudi, Team MZ’s dancer, has lost her bag. Bring it back to her: she is waiting in the courtyard of Vert Sector 5, where she rehearses her choreographies, and she thanks you… with a battle.
Your qualifying-match opponent is Willem the Waiter. His three monkeys are at Lv. 24: plan for a varied team.

Willem
the WaiterSimisage (Grass), Simipour (Water) and Simisear (Fire) cover each other. The catch: their Protect is a Plus move, which also protects against Plus moves. Wait until they have used it (the cooldown is long) before launching your best attacks. A Flying-type Pokémon (Pidgeotto, Fletchling evolved into Fletchinder) hits Simisage super effectively and resists its attacks.
Congratulations: you are now at Rank V.
Mission 9: Chasing the Mysterious Pokémon
In the middle of the night, a small green and black creature appears before you: Zygarde, in its 10% Forme. It seems to want you to follow it. Don’t lose sight of it: the chase goes through the alleys and then across the rooftops of Vert Sector, to a courtyard where an Absol surrounded by a purple aura suffers in silence. Before your eyes, it Mega Evolves on its own.
A.Z. joins you and lends you his Lucario as well as his Mega Ring: for the first time, you are going to Mega Evolve a Pokémon. The fight is a “boss battle”: Absol is giant, it targets you as much as your Pokémon, and you have to dodge its area attacks while striking back.

Mega Absol
Absol stays fairly passive: it throws Air Slashes in your direction and Dark Pulses. Its charged attack is a huge Dark Pulse that strikes several times all around it: get away as soon as it starts to glow, then come back to strike.
Activate Lucario’s Mega Evolution as soon as the gauge is full: its Fighting-type moves are super effective, and a Rogue Mega Evolution Pokémon takes hits poorly from a Mega-evolved Pokémon and from Plus moves.
Reward: Absolite
Mission 10: The Secrets of Mega Evolution
The next day, Urbain/Taunie takes you to Quasartico Inc., the company that organizes the Z-A Royale and is redeveloping Lumiose City. You are handed your own Mega Ring there. To practice, give Absol the Absolite to hold and battle Urbain/Taunie.
Vinnie and the Jump to Rank F
Vinnie, the secretary of the president of Quasartico, summons you. To fight Rogue Mega Evolution Pokémon, Team MZ must be able to use Mega Evolution in competition, which is normally only allowed from Rank G. He therefore offers you a deal: beat him in a qualifying match and you will go straight from Rank V to Rank F. Meet him on the Quasartico battle court, then win a challenge ticket the following night.
Vinnie then explains the situation in his offices: since the work on the Prism Tower, Pokémon have been Mega Evolving without a Trainer and becoming dangerous. Stop by the Neo Café, then attend Team MZ’s first strategy meeting at Hotel Z. On that occasion, A.Z. gives you the Mega Stone for your starter: Meganiumite, Emboarite or Feraligite.
Mega MeganiumGrassFairyIf you chose Chikorita.
Mega EmboarFireFightingIf you chose Tepig.
Mega FeraligatrWaterDragonIf you chose Totodile.
The meeting leads to the first wave of Rogue Mega missions: three Pokémon to calm, in whatever order you like. Head to the next chapter.
Making the Most of Mega Evolution
- Only one Pokémon on the team can Mega Evolve per battle, provided it holds its Mega Stone.
- The Mega Power gauge fills as you attack. When it is full, pressing the right stick triggers Mega Evolution.
- Once Mega-evolved, the Pokémon’s stats leap and all of its moves become Plus moves. But the gauge drains: at zero, it returns to its normal form.
- Tip: recalling the Mega-evolved Pokémon freezes its gauge. You can recharge it with another Pokémon, then send it back into battle.
