Mt. Battle returns in XD, this time reserved for the adventure. You pass through during the story to meet the Area 1 leader, and can then climb its hundred battles to win the Johto starters.

Mt. Battle.

In the story

Es Cade advises you to go see the Area 1 leader. Three Trainers await you before him, then the Area 1 leader reveals the location of the Shadow Pokémon Lab. The passage is detailed in chapter 8 of the walkthrough.

The hundred battles

  • Ten areas of ten Trainers, with healing between each battle; opposing levels range from about 9 to 70.
  • Every ten battles, you can save and go back down; you then resume at the start of the next area.
  • Each completed area earns Poké Coupons and a TM; the tenth earns 2,000 Poké Coupons.
  • Each legendary Pokémon on your team reduces your Poké Coupon winnings by 15%.
  • Climbing all hundred battles with the same team earns each of its Pokémon the Earth Ribbon.
The Earth Ribbon, the reward for the hundred battles with the same team.

The reward: the Johto starters

The first time you beat all hundred Trainers, after finishing the game and without ever leaving Mt. Battle or changing teams, you choose a Johto starter: Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile. Each knows a special move it can’t learn any other way in this generation, such as Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn or Hydro Cannon. Start over to get the other two.

The Move Relearner

At Mt. Battle, a Move Relearner sitting near the Move Deleter teaches, for 1,000 Poké Coupons, a move your Pokémon has never learned or has forgotten. A tutor in Agate Village also teaches certain moves, each only once.
