As in Colosseum, a Shadow Pokémon has to be purified to regain its moves, gain levels and be tradable. XD adds a major new feature: the Purification Chamber, set up in the Pokémon HQ Lab.

Agate Village, where the Relic Stone still purifies Shadow Pokémon.

The Heart Gauge

Every Shadow Pokémon has a Heart Gauge, visible in the P★DA. It goes down when you walk with it, when it enters battle, when you call out to it during Reverse Mode, with a Scent massage, or by leaving it at the Day Care in Agate Village. As it goes down, the Pokémon regains its moves and reveals its nature.

Reverse Mode

Reverse Mode replaces Colosseum’s Hyper Mode. A Pokémon in Reverse Mode can disobey, hurt itself and lose HP every turn. To snap it out of it, call out to it during battle or use a Scent: its gauge goes down in the process.

The Relic Stone

As five years earlier, the Relic Stone in Agate Village purifies a Pokémon whose gauge is empty. This is where you purify your first Shadow Pokémon, the Teddiursa, under Es Cade’s eyes.

The Purification Chamber

Available at the Pokémon HQ Lab after the Cipher Lab, it is made up of nine chambers. In each one, you place a Shadow Pokémon in the center and up to four normal Pokémon around it.

  • Purification progresses with the chamber’s tempo, which depends on the types of the four Pokémon placed around it.
  • The tempo is at its maximum when each Pokémon has the type advantage over the next one, clockwise: the last one must in turn have the advantage over the first.
  • It purifies while you play: fill the chambers before every long trip.

The case of XD001

The Shadow Lugia cannot be purified by walking, battling or using Scents. You have to bring all nine chambers to maximum tempo at the same time, then place it in one of them: it is then purified instantly. See XD001, the Shadow Lugia.

XD001, the only Shadow Pokémon that requires all nine chambers.
