Catching Tips

All the tips you need to succeed at catching Pokémon!
Note: you will find some screenshots from the French version.

1] Legendary Pokémon
Mewtwo

About this Pokémon:

Mewtwo is clearly the most powerful Pokémon of all. It can defeat any opponent in a single hit.

To find it, you will have to wait until you have collected all the Badges and caught at least 60 Pokémon.

Once you have met both requirements, head to Cerulean City, then cross Mt. Moon. At the very top, on the left, you will be able to Surf. Keep surfing until you reach the Unknown Dungeon, Mewtwo’s lair.

Make your way through this kind of maze [plans coming soon] to meet the famous and impressive Mewtwo.

Keep in mind that it is level 70 in the game.

Catching this Pokémon:
Screenshot of the Unknown Dungeon, Mewtwo's lairWhen you are standing in front of it, nothing could be simpler: use the Master Ball that the president of Silph Co. gave you earlier. You can also catch it with an Ultra Ball if you want to keep the Master Ball, but it is rather tricky. In that case, you need to put it to sleep, paralyze (or freeze) it, and get it down to just 2 or 3 HP. Then throw as many different Balls as you can…
G/S/C trio: Entei, Raikou, Suicune

About these Pokémon:

Three legendary Pokémon from Gold, Silver and Crystal were added as “catchable” in the new FireRed and LeafGreen versions: Entei, Suicune and Raikou.
They are very popular because they are powerful and strategic. The big problem is that they are really hard to catch, and even harder to encounter…

To get your hands on them, you must have beaten the Pokémon League and have the National Pokédex!

The first time Screenshot: Entei, Raikou and Suicuneyou see them, it will purely be down to luck… In most cases, you will run into them by going back and forth between Saffron City and the 4 cities around it (Celadon City, Lavender Town, Vermilion City and Cerulean City).
They are generally found on the routes.

Also, you will only be able to catch one of the three.

If you choose Bulbasaur at the start –> You get Entei
If you choose Charmander at the start –> You get Suicune
If you choose Squirtle at the start –> You get Raikou

Keep in mind that they are level 50 in the game.

When you face one of the trio’s Pokémon, it will do everything it can to flee from the very first turn!!
On top of that, we have been told that even when asleep, it can still run away!
An Ultra Ball is a must to catch it properly once it is (very) weakened.
Do not use a Fast Ball, it would be a waste of time.
Warning: if it uses Roar, you will no longer be able to catch it.
R/B trio: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres

About these Pokémon:

These Pokémon are easy to catch in the game. Getting to them, however, is already more complicated ^^
We strongly advise you to buy some Max Repels before you start exploring the places where this trio lives.

A/ Catching Articuno:
Once you have obtained Surf and Strength in Fuchsia City, head to the bottom of the town. Use Surf and keep going until you come across a cave: this is the Seafoam Islands. Take the right-hand entrance, the one you need to reach Articuno.

B/ Catching Zapdos:
You also need Surf.
Go to Cerulean City, then take the path that leads to Rock Tunnel (toward Lavender Town). Use Surf along the way, and you will arrive at the Power Plant.

Search carefully inside until you find Zapdos.

C/ Catching Moltres:
You can catch this Pokémon before beating the League, and it turns out to be quite effective, which is handy!

Go to One Island, then walk north. You will come to a cave with Moltres at the very end. Note that Surf and Strength are required to reach it.

Keep in mind that they are level 50 in the game.

When you face one of the trio’s Pokémon, don’t panic… I hope you have a Pokémon that can put it to sleep, because otherwise it could be difficult.
An Ultra Ball is a must to catch it properly once it is asleep and weakened.
Deoxys

About this Pokémon:

Deoxys sprite
Deoxys

Deoxys has had a certain aura ever since we first heard of it, because it is reputed to be as rare as Mew, Celebi or Jirachi (Jirachi and Deoxys were discovered at the same time!). We even thought that Nintendo would kindly hand it out in the summer of 2003 in Japan… But that did not happen! In fact, it will perhaps be distributed this year by Nintendo, in the form of a ticket to use to go to Island 9, where it is located. On the occasion of the release of Emerald?

When you get there, there is a very small puzzle to solve.

Screenshot: Deoxys
Screenshot: Deoxys

Basically, when you press the triangle in the middle of Island 9, it moves. You then have to head toward its new position using as few steps as possible. The triangle moves 7 more times after that, and turns completely red! All you have to do then is press it one last time to make Deoxys appear, to music worthy of the famous -and cult- TV series The Invaders.

Keep in mind that it is level 30 in the game.

Even at level 30, it is EXTREMELY powerful
The priority with it is therefore to put it to sleep, paralyze it, or whatever you like.
Lugia and Ho-Oh

About these Pokémon:

Let’s be clear from the start: you cannot get these Pokémon Screenshot: Lugia and Ho-Oh“legally” other than through Nintendo’s distribution of the ticket to travel to Navel Rock.

Once inside, you have to keep going for a veeeery long time until you reach an intersection between 2 ladders (one going up, the other going down).

After that, climb (or descend) the 10 floors to arrive either in the sky facing Ho-Oh, or in the depths in front of Lugia.

Keep in mind that they are level 70 in the game.

Pokémon:

They are just as hard to catch as Mewtwo.
Obviously, if you have kept the Master Ball, use it on one of the two Pokémon.
Otherwise, all you can do is use Ultra Balls and sweat blood to catch them!

2] Some information
Mew

Information:
We know that Mew is present in the game, Screenshot: Mewas in Ruby and Sapphire (since it can appear in the Pokédex, for example).
Even so, we have not yet discovered how to get your hands on it.
Besides, it is neither in Colosseum nor in Ruby/Sapphire.

In France, it was distributed for the Pokémon Championship 2000 in Blue, Red and Yellow cartridges.

Celebi

Screenshot: CelebiInformation:
Celebi is, if not more, AT LEAST as legendary and sought-after as Mew.

In France, Celebi was distributed at the Celebi Tour at the end of 2001 in Gold, Silver and Crystal cartridges (released on the day of the distribution).

Jirachi

Screenshot: JirachiInformation:
Star of the 6th movie Jirachi: Wish Maker, it is touching and legendary…
It was distributed once in the United States on the occasion of the Pokémon Colosseum pre-order (February 9, 2004).

In Japan, it was distributed in July 2003 on the occasion of the release of Pokémon 6.

It is also available in Pokémon Channel (Bonus Disc) on GameCube.
