🛤️Routes 5 and 6

South of Cerulean City, Route 5 ends at Saffron City, whose guards won’t let you through. Take the Underground Path, a long corridor that comes out on Route 6. On Route 5, the Pokémon Day Care can look after a Pokémon and help it grow while you walk.

⚓Vermilion City

The port of Vermilion City is full of little gifts:

  1. At the Pokémon Center, a lady gives you the VS Seeker, which shows which Trainers are ready for a rematch: ideal for training.
  2. The Fishing Guru, in his house to the northwest, gives you the Old Rod. It barely reels in anything but Magikarp, but it’s a start.
  3. At the Pokémon Fan Club, listen to the chairman talk about his Pokémon: he hands you a Bike Voucher. Trade it at the Bike Shop in Cerulean City for a Bicycle, normally far too expensive.

🚢Aboard the S.S. Anne

Show your S.S. Ticket to the sailor at the pier. The ship is packed with Trainers: Sailors, Gentlemen and Lasses are hiding in the cabins. Search the kitchen, where berries are hidden in the trash cans, and pick up TM31 Brick Break and TM44 Rest.

Our strategy

Kadabra is physically frail but uses Confusion: hit it first with a physical attack or Bite. Raticate and its Hyper Fang always hurt. His starter has evolved: it is level 20, so bring Super Potions.

Then head up to the captain’s cabin, at the very end. He is seasick: rub his back and, to thank you, he teaches you Cut, HM01. The ship sets sail as soon as you go back down.

⚡Vermilion City Gym

A small tree blocks the Gym entrance: cut it down. Inside, two switches are hidden in the trash cans. Check them one by one: once you have found the first, the second is always in a neighboring trash can. If you get it wrong, everything resets. The two electric barriers then drop, and Lt. Surge awaits.

Our strategy

A Ground-type Pokémon makes the battle very easy: a Diglett from Diglett’s Cave, just to the east, is immune to Electric moves and knocks out Raichu with Dig or Magnitude. A Geodude or an Onix also does the job. Grass-type Pokémon resist well. Raichu, at level 24, uses Double Team and Quick Attack: don’t let its evasion pile up.
