A moving truck pulls up in Littleroot Town, a small village in southern Hoenn. Your father, Norman, has just been appointed Gym Leader, and this is where you will live… and begin your adventure. Before the day is out, you will have saved Professor Birch and received your first Pokémon.

🚚Arriving in Littleroot Town
The game opens with a question from Professor Birch: are you a boy (Brendan) or a girl (May)? The other character will become your neighbor and rival. When you arrive, your mother sends you to your room to set the wall clock: it handles time-based events, such as berry growth. Don’t forget the PC in your room, which contains a Potion.
Next, go and greet your neighbors, Professor Birch’s family. Upstairs, his child introduces themselves, then heads off to study Pokémon in the field, just like their father.
🆘Professor Birch in Danger
As you try to leave the village to the north, you hear a cry on Route 101: Professor Birch is being chased by a wild Pokémon, a Poochyena in Ruby and Sapphire, a Zigzagoon in Emerald. He asks you to open his bag and use one of the three Poké Balls to rescue him. This is how you choose your starter Pokémon.
TreeckoNo. 5GrassGrass. Fast and accurate, it evolves into Grovyle at level 16, then Sceptile at level 36. The early game is easy against Roxanne, but trickier against Flannery and Winona.
TorchicNo. 5FireFire. It evolves into Combusken at level 16 and becomes Fire and Fighting: a huge asset against Roxanne and Wattson. Blaziken (level 36) is a formidable attacker.
MudkipNo. 5WaterWater. The most comfortable choice: Marshtomp (level 16) becomes Water and Ground, has only one weakness (Grass) and is immune to Electric.
The battle is very simple: your level 5 Pokémon faces a level 2 opponent. Use Pound, Scratch or Tackle until you win.
⚔️Your Rival on Route 103
To thank you, Professor Birch lets you keep the Pokémon you used. He advises you to go and find his child, who is studying Pokémon on Route 103, north of Oldale Town. Cross Oldale Town (the clerk at the Poké Mart gives you a Potion) and head to Route 103: your rival challenges you to a first battle. Their Pokémon is the one with the advantage over yours.

A battle without much danger: at level 5, all three Pokémon know only one offensive move (Pound, Scratch or Tackle) and one status move. Attack every turn and use your Potion if your HP drops into the red.
📕The Pokédex and the Running Shoes
Back at the lab, Professor Birch entrusts you with the Pokédex, and your rival gives you a few Poké Balls. When you stop by home, your mother gives you the Running Shoes: hold down the B button to run. Essential!
