You have barely left the Gym when a cry rings out: the Grunt from Petalburg Woods has just stolen a package from the Devon Corporation! The chase takes you to Rusturf Tunnel, then, aboard Mr. Briney’s boat, to the little island of Dewford Town and its Gym plunged into darkness.

🏃The chase: Route 116 and Rusturf Tunnel

The Devon Corporation researcher begs you to get the stolen Devon Goods back. The thief has fled east, along Route 116. Six trainers, including students from the Rustboro Trainer School, are waiting for you on the way. At the end, the Grunt has taken refuge in Rusturf Tunnel, a tunnel under construction… and he is holding Peeko, Mr. Briney’s Wingull, hostage!

Defeat the Grunt: he gives you back the Devon Goods, and Peeko returns to its owner. The tunnel is blocked by boulders: you will get through later with Rock Smash.

🏢The Devon Corporation and the PokéNav

Back in Rustboro, return the package to the researcher, who takes you to the top floor of the Devon Corporation building. The president, Mr. Stone, gives you a PokéNav (a map of the region, the status of your Pokémon, and later trainer rematches). He also entrusts you with two errands: deliver a Letter to his son Steven, who is exploring Granite Cave on Dewford, and deliver the Devon Goods to Captain Stern in Slateport City.

⛵At sea with Mr. Briney

Go back to the beach on Route 104, to Mr. Briney’s house. Overjoyed to have found Peeko again, he agrees to take you wherever you like: set course for Dewford Town, a fishing village on an island to the southwest. During the crossing, you catch sight of Routes 105 and 106: you will explore them once you can Surf.

🏝️Dewford Town and Granite Cave

Dewford is tiny: a Pokémon Center, a Gym and a few houses. A fisherman near the Gym gives you an Old Rod, and a trainer near the dock gives you a Silk Scarf. In the north of the island, Granite Cave is where Steven is. At the entrance, a Hiker hands you HM05 Flash.

The Knuckle Badge is required to use Flash outside of battle: you can explore the cave now or after the Gym. Steven Stone is in a secluded room on the ground floor, which you reach by going through the first basement level. Give him the Letter: he gives you TM47 Steel Wing.

🥊Dewford Gym

The Gym is plunged into darkness: your field of vision widens with every trainer you defeat. The Battle Girls and Black Belts line up Meditite and Machop.

Our strategy

Fighting-type Pokémon fear Flying and Psychic moves: Wingull, Taillow and Ralts (Confusion) are your best allies. Makuhita is very sturdy thanks to its Thick Fat ability and hits hard with Knock Off. Beware of Bulk Up, which raises its Attack and Defense: do not let the battle drag on.
