East of Pewter City, Route 3 lines up trainers like pearls on a necklace. At the end, Mt. Moon and its dark tunnels: this is where you will first run into the fearsome Team Rocket, who have come to plunder the mountain’s fossils.

🥾Route 3, a hedge of trainers

Youngsters, Lasses, Bug Catchers: eight trainers await you on this mountain path, often with Bug or Normal Pokémon. Battle them all, as the experience you gain will make Mt. Moon much more comfortable. The tall grass is home to Pidgey, Spearow and above all Jigglypuff, whose Sing puts the opponent to sleep.

🏥The Pokémon Center… and the Magikarp scam

Just before the cave entrance, a Pokémon Center lets you catch your breath. Inside, a man offers you a Magikarp for ₽500. Is it a scam? Yes and no: Magikarp is useless in battle, but it evolves at level 20 into Gyarados, one of the most powerful Pokémon in the game. If you can afford it, it’s an excellent investment.

🌙Inside the tunnels of Mt. Moon

The mountain has three floors (1F, B1F and B2F) connected by ladders. The fossils, like the exit to Route 4, are on B2F: follow our maps below so you don’t go around in circles. Take your time exploring: the cave is full of items, including two Moon Stones (one is hidden in a dead end near the fossils), a Rare Candy, TM01 Mega Punch and TM12 Water Gun.

Zubat pop up at every step and their Supersonic confuses your Pokémon: the Escape Rope found on site, or Repels bought in Pewter City, will spare you many pointless battles.

  • ClefairyNormal

The mountain's treasure, very rare. With a Moon Stone, it evolves into Clefable.

  • ZubatPoisonFlying

Everywhere and annoying. It will become Crobat at level 22.

  • ParasBugGrass

Paras evolves into Parasect at level 24 and learns Spore, a move that puts the target to sleep without fail.

  • GeodudeRockGround

Geodude makes a good shield against Flying and Electric Pokémon.

🦴Team Rocket and the choice of fossil

Several Team Rocket Grunts are searching the cave for fossils. Their Rattata, Ekans and Koffing are nothing insurmountable. At the back of B2F, a Super Nerd guards two fossils and refuses to share them: beat him, then choose one of the two. The other is lost for good.

  • OmanyteRockWater

The Helix Fossil is revived as Omanyte, a Rock and Water Pokémon with solid Defense, which evolves into Omastar.

  • KabutoRockWater

The Dome Fossil is revived as Kabuto, also Rock and Water, which evolves into Kabutops, an excellent attacker.

The fossils are revived at the lab on Cinnabar Island, much later in the adventure. Put it away and keep heading to the exit, which leads out to Route 4.

Yellow

In Yellow, Jessie and James, the famous Team Rocket duo, are waiting for you on B2F with Ekans, Meowth and Koffing. Their theme music recalls that of the animated series. You will also come across Sandshrew on 1F.
