Cerulean City, the city of crystal-clear waters, is home to Gym Leader Misty and her Water Pokémon. But even before you step through the doors of her Gym, expect a lively encounter: Blue is hanging around, and Team Rocket has just burgled a house in the neighborhood.

🏙️Discovering Cerulean City

When you arrive via Route 4, heal up at the Pokémon Center. Several buildings are worth a visit: the Bike Shop, where a Bicycle costs the astronomical sum of one million Poké Dollars (you’ll get one another way, be patient), and a house guarded by a policeman, which has just been burgled by Team Rocket. You can’t go in for now.

⚔️Blue, once again

As you head to the north of the city, toward the bridge, Blue cuts you off. His team now has four Pokémon, including an Abra that only knows Teleport: it will never attack you.

Our strategy

Start with Pidgeotto, the most dangerous thanks to its Speed, then make use of the useless Abra to calmly heal your team. Save your best Pokémon for his starter, which is level 17.

🌉Nugget Bridge (Route 24)

North of Cerulean City, Nugget Bridge is guarded by five trainers who must be beaten in succession. The last one, a mysterious recruiter, congratulates you, hands you a Nugget (worth ₽5,000 if sold at any shop) and tries to enlist you in Team Rocket. Refuse: he attacks you with an Ekans and a Zubat.

Beyond the bridge, Route 24 continues to the west: TM45 Thunder Wave lies on the ground there. The tall grass is home to Abra, which teleports away on the first turn: put it to sleep or throw a Poké Ball right away. Oddish (in Red) and Bellsprout (in Blue) are perfect assets against Misty.

💧Cerulean City Gym

The Gym is a big swimming pool. Two trainers, a Swimmer♂ and a Jr. Trainer♀, await you before Misty. Her two Pokémon are fast and her Starmie is one of the toughest opponents of the early game.

Our strategy

Starmie is fast and hits hard with BubbleBeam, a Water attack that can lower your Speed. If you chose Charmander, don’t send it out: rely on a Pikachu from Viridian Forest, an Oddish or a Bellsprout. With Bulbasaur, Vine Whip settles the matter in a few turns. Keep Potions handy: Starmie is much sturdier than Staryu.

Yellow

In Yellow, two gifts await you in Cerulean City and on Route 24. A young woman in a house in the city entrusts you with Bulbasaur if your Pikachu likes you enough (heal it often, and avoid letting it faint). On Route 24, a boy abandons his Charmander and gives it to you. Your Pikachu, for its part, does wonders against Misty.
