Vermilion City smells of sea air and oil: it’s Kanto’s great port. The S.S. Anne cruise ship docks there, and the city is full of little secrets. Its Gym, however, is hidden behind a shrub that you will need to learn to cut.

Prepare for the cruise aboard the S.S. Anne
To collect
Bike Voucher, Old Rod
Trade
a Spearow for a Farfetch’d
Recommended detour
the Bicycle in Cerulean City

⚓The port’s must-sees

Start with the Pokémon Center, then make the rounds of the houses:

  1. Pokémon Fan Club (to the north): listen to the Chairman brag about his Rapidash and his Ponyta. To thank you for your patience, he gives you a Bike Voucher.
  2. Fishing Guru’s House (to the northwest): he gives you an Old Rod. It only fishes up Magikarp, but it’s a start.
  3. Trade House: a resident offers you his Farfetch’d in exchange for a Spearow. Farfetch’d can’t be found in the wild in Red and Blue: accept!
  4. Lt. Surge’s Gym: a shrub blocks its entrance. You’ll need the move Cut, which you will find aboard the S.S. Anne.

🚲Detour: the Bicycle

The Bike Voucher lets you claim a Bicycle for free at the Bike Shop in Cerulean City. The detour is well worth it: head back up via Route 6, the Underground Path and Route 5, show the voucher to the clerk, and you’re all set. On a bike, you move twice as fast. Use it from the Items menu, or register it to the Select button to hop on with a single press.

🚢Boarding the S.S. Anne

South of the city, the pier leads to the S.S. Anne. Show the S.S. Ticket given to you by Bill to the sailor at the entrance. The ship won’t stay in port forever: it will set sail as soon as you get off with the move Cut. Take advantage of the visit to battle its many passengers.
