Coming out of Diglett’s Cave, you are back on Route 2, east side. With the move Cut, a whole series of small treasures that were out of reach at the start of the adventure become accessible. This is also where you will get the move you need for the next cave.

Objective
Get HM05 Flash
Requirement
have caught at least 10 Pokémon species
To collect
Old Amber, Moon Stone, HP Up, TM42
Next
Cerulean City, then Route 9

💡HM05 Flash

Right next to the cave exit, a small gatehouse connects Route 2 to Viridian Forest. Inside, one of Professor Oak’s aides checks your Pokédex: if you have caught at least 10 different species, he gives you HM05 Flash. This move lights up caves plunged into darkness, like the one awaiting you on Route 10.

Teach it to a Pokémon that doesn’t need it much in battle (Pikachu, Abra, Clefairy, Voltorb…). To use it outside of battle, you need the Boulder Badge: you already have it.

✂️The Bush-Cutting Tour

  1. Route 2, east part: a Moon Stone and an HP Up are waiting between the ledges, to the southeast.
  2. Pewter Museum of Science: cut the bush east of the museum to reach the back door. A scientist gives you the Old Amber, which contains the DNA of an Aerodactyl.
  3. Viridian City: cut the bush to the northwest for a Potion, then talk to the man near the pond, to the southwest: he gives you TM42 Dream Eater.
  • AerodactylRockFlying

The Old Amber is revived at the lab on Cinnabar Island. Aerodactyl, Rock and Flying, is one of the fastest Pokémon of the first generation.

Route 2 (east part)

🧭Toward Route 9

Your next destination is Lavender Town, east of Cerulean City. Go back through Diglett’s Cave, Vermilion City and the Underground Path to return to Cerulean City (or cross Mt. Moon on foot again). East of Cerulean City, a bush blocks the entrance to Route 9: one use of Cut, and the road is open.
